How about a thanks from Usair and United pilots and all the others who's pensions are now to be paid for by the tax payers of this Country?

Since the pension quar. program is now 23 billion dollars in the red, quess who is going to be stuck with paying it? Is that bull sh it or what?

Your sympathy is really touching, dude.

 ....wondering if "fellow" has ever posted anything that wasn't flame bait....

He's the most illiterate, ignorant space waster on this entire message board. Just a bottom-dwelling, PFT lifetime loser. I wouldn't waste one second even thinking about anything this anus has to say.

We don't live in a communist state. Why the heck should I have to pay for their retirement? It's not about compasion. Heck, why not pay me a retirement out of the fund? Lets just make it 100 billion and let every one have some retirement money!!

yes because obviously it's the pilots' fault that the company ditched the pension plan as part of their cost-cutting measures. Why do we always insist on blaming the pilots for management's decision?

Who said any thing about blaming the pilots? My point is it is not my fault. Why should I have to pay for their retirement? It's their problem not mine.
I wonder if any of them would send me some money for my retirement. How about the money I lost in my 401k and Roth IRA when 911 hit? How about them replacing all that money? They lost money, and WE have to pay for it. That sir, is BS.

Your loss is truly touching. Please PM me your address. I'd like to send you a check, in light of your hardship.

AFELLOWAVIATOR -

Your name is very inappropriate! You think only of your small world in which you make no difference. Do you have kids? I don't, but I still pay school tax, is this fair? I can't stand wasting my hard earned money on something a stupid as school, I mean what bull, maybe I should just get a free education at Harvard since I pay this tax, oh yeah I'm to busy paying for your kids lunch because your such a dumb a$$. Remember Karmah! Learn from the Buddest and release your Dukka, you'll feel better. The government provides all types of assitance to many different areas that not all use, but is nice to have if you need it.

By the way to all the guys that think the government should save your tax money and let U and United go Bankrupt, how much do you think the unemployment, welfare, social security, housing assitance, WICK, and all other types of aid cost for 100k + unemployed people.

Dukka?

Pardon my ignorance of Buddism, but is "Dukka" just another word for poop? I know I always feel better when I "release my Dukka".

Ah, yes PFT aviator is out of the penalty box.
Why not pay for a pilot on his way out of his career, you paid for yours on the way in.

well this all sounds great, i hope indy goes bankrupt soon, because then we will live forever, just like ual and usair.

all we have to do is get a judge in our hometown to like us and keep granting extensions, and well be set...

I've had that thought myself.

AFELLOWAVIATOR,
First of all, if you lost your shirt with your 401K after 9/11, you obviously didn't invest it very well, but the difference is that YOU CONTROL IT! These airlines have 'defined benefit plans' that the carriers control, and they have been raiding that till for years.
Second, I doubt yoou remember the Savings and Loan scandal years ago. By your logic, all of those people should have lost all of their money they had tied up in the bank. That's why banks insure through the FDIC, it's like insurance for the accounts held at that bank. In the case of pensions and defined benefit plans, the equivalent is the PBGC. The only difference is that these accounts are only insured by the PBGC for about $44,000 per person.
So here you are, about to lose possibly millions, and all you'll get is $44K, all because the MANAGEMENT of the company you work for couldn't manage their way to the bathroom, let alone run a company responsibly.

Russ,

I think you beat many of us to the punch! Great post. Exactly what I, along with many other people were thinking.

We should shed few tears

Although it is indeed sad and unfortunate that mismanagement has brought the pension funds to this, the end of the defined benefit retirement, the pilot groups and alpa have had a hand in it. How? Plain selfishness and greed. Does anyone really think the contracts achieved were sustainable, especially in an industry notoriously so cyclical?

What about the fact there is no pension at the regionals, where large revenue streams flow straight up to mainline systems, subsidizing mainline operations, pay, and benefits. Not trying to flame bait here, but that's the way it is. nwa has just recently started skimming off the top an pinnacle, whose stock is being used to fund the nwa pension fund! Regionals make up a large percentage of total system flying, yet the pilots get a fraction of the pay, and pathetic 401k programs, if anything.

This is so because years ago, groups of mainline pilots, in order to save their own pay and retirements, allowed mgmt. to outsource small airplanes and routes. This was the beginning of mgmts. current divide and conquer strategy.
The junior people were forever thrown over the side.
Saying that regionals are just a stopover, an apprenticeship, does not cut it either. Barely a majority of pilots who even attempt to make the jump are sucessful due to slots reserved for military and affirmitive action types. Those who remain are living third-class airline careers, and have few alternatives (exit the industry, fractional, low-cost carriers) due to restrictions placed on their "companies" by air service agreements.
alpa itself, in numerous forums, has acknowledged the inequities and career degradation caused by outsourcing and whipsawing, but to date has been unsuccessful at doing anything about it. Why? Because few people on a seniority list whose pay and retirement are threatened are willing to pay the price to achieve unity. Why should they, if they are not directly affected and concessions to mgmt. will put off the pain until after they are gone. It is a huge leadership challenge for unions.

The reductions in pension and pay are truly hard for those involved, and for the profession itself, but I can't take time to wring my hands since I spend my off days on a side job to save for my own retirement.
By the way, ever notice a mainline pilot who needs to carry a lunchbox on a four-day? Not me...

Are you saying YOU some how knew it was coming and put all your money in a money market account? Or are you so young you don't understand the market? Has to be one or the other if you are implying you did not take a major hit like every one else when 911 hit.

dude you are such a loser! It amazes me that you make such statements! People like you are the first to whine for help when something goes wrong. Change your name to a$$hole and find another board, no one gives a shi$ to hear your uneducated banter about how it's not your problem.

F U!

AFELLOWAVIATOR,
First of all, yes, I knew something was coming. Not nessesarily 9/11, but anyone who has been in the industry knows that it is cyclical. By the way, not to turn this political, but notice how the industry always declines during Republican administrations. That was my first clue to move things around in my own 401K.

Secondly, no, I'm not some young kid fresh out of flight school. Look at my profile; do you even know what a CV-600 or CV-640 IS? Chances are, I was getting beat up doing night freight when you were popping your first zit. I also see, from other posters, that you are probably a PFT puke. I hope, if you are one of these, that you realize that by going for PFT, you contributed to lowering the bar for ALL pilots who worked their way up in this industry. In your own way, you helped this to happen, because by giving up any semblance of professionalism, you have shown to management that they can get away with a lot of things, such as requireing pilots to pay for their own training and that they can get away with not adequately funding their pension responsibilities.

By the way, did you PFT? If you didn't, then I apologise, but if you did, then you are worse than a twit, because a twit doesn't know what the outcomes of their actions are.

Oh paleeze. You rearranged your money when a Rep. Admin. moved into the white house for that sole reason. And THAT saved your money. Tell me another one.

As far as PFT. Is it illegal? Is it in the Union Constitution and Bylaws ? Do you feel the same about buying your type if you get hired at SW? Do you buy goods that are the result of non-union labor?

No, as I have said many times on here, I did not have to PFT. I worked as a flight inst. as a new hire for two years, then moved out on line. Others did pay but until some one shows me where it is illegal or against a Union rule I will continue to assert they did absolutely nothing wrong.

Your post on 1-2-05 on another thread says you did PFT. To refresh your memory, here it is:

Don't piss on my leg and tell me it's raining, you PAY FOR TRAINING SCUMBAG.

You did more damage to this industry than anyone and don't tell me that one contract makes up for this. The people who wanted to get into commercial aviation while you stood in line to buy your job will forever look down upon you.

I am so hurt. That cuts like a knife. Excuse me while I go dry my eyes.....

You people crack me up. You take this sh it wayyy too serious.

What a bunch of idiots.

...and oh by the way, I paid cash. No loan.

Brilliant post. Dead on. "B" scale wages, even within the same mainline group were a very effective, and divisive (sp ?) tool for airline management in the 80's. What did they call this strategy ? Something about let's you and him fight.
