Was just back at Vance a couple weeks ago for a little reunion. A bud of mine who is a T-1 FAIP says there are plenty of rental homes north of the base, probably north of Owen K. Garriott I'd guess. Don't waste your time with the housing office, there must be like a realtor or something to help you find a house to rent while you're there. As a single dude, I lived in the dorms and hated every minute of it. You'd come home to find a report card on your sink: "Dishes in sink, bed unmade, blah, blah, blah". I think if you got three bad report cards, they send you to see the OSS/CC or casual monitor. Yuk.

I didn't realize until then that the seal on the refrigerator door could collect dirt. Fortunately for me, there was one of those "report cards" to educate me.

Ahhh, memories. I used to be the casual monitor at Vance and there was nothing better than wasting my time doing room inspections or meeting with the ones who couldn't remember to clean their room.

It was one of those jobs where I spent 95% of my time dealing with the 5% of people who were having trouble adapting to life in the military. It's much better to blend in and stay off the radar screen. Several of the casual students I had problems dealing with showed up back in my office later after they had flunked out- I was also in charge of anyone who left flight training without wings on their chest. I did get to hear some good stories of how not to pass flight training (go AWOL, sleep with an enlisted person, blatently lie to your instructors, or run a porn web site in your spare time just to name a few).
