I just moved away from CVG.
My wife and I lived in the Orleans subdivision in Union Kentucky. When you drive into the neighborhood you have to drive past all of the $300,000 houses and follow the signs to "Maple St. Homes".
There in Orleans North behind all of the rich folks is a neighborhood for first-time home buyers. Homes start in the $90,000 range for a 2 bedroom, 2 bath ranch and go up to $150,000-$160,000 for a 4-bedroom home. Community landscaping is really nice. Terrific sidewalks, well lit streets. There are a few ponds, a fantastic playground for the kids with basketball courts etc. Big park (we flew electric RC there). They have a no-money down program for first time buyers as well.
There are essentially a half-dozen home designs. You can not change the architecture (they're cookie-cutter homes) but you can pick the colors, carpet, kitchen appliances, brick, etc.
We owned the house for about a year-and-a-half and made quite a bit of money selling it. It's a good value for the money and there are good people living in the neighborhood.
A lot of Comair folks (and one PSA Captain) lived there and we used to joke that it was a good "Co-pilot" neighborhood. A great place to start out until your wife forces you to go buy that "Captain house". I think their website is
www.maplestreethomes.com and they have several communities in OH and NKY. It's kind of the low-fare division of Fischer homes. (think Metrojet for houses)
Why pay rent? Buy yourself something small, get a few crash-padders to share it with you, and pay YOURSELF. That place is a bargain. We were sad to leave.
