Subject:
PILLOW REMOVAL AND HOKY SWEEPER ADDITION

ASA continuously searches for areas of improvement and increased efficiency. Pillows on the aircraft

are one such item. Passenger and team member feedback indicate customers feel pillows in overhead

bins were more a nuisance than an attraction. Pillows occupy valued overhead space and create delays

in the boarding process. As a result of this customer feedback, ASA on March 15 will eliminate pillows

on all our flights. As part of the same effort, Delta announced it will eliminate pillows on flights within

the continental United States, and to/from Canada, Caribbean, Mexico and Central America. Blankets

will remain on board and customers can use them as pillows if needed.

By creating more space in the overhead bins, ASA will improve the customer boarding process, which

will result in improved on-time performance – a top satisfaction driver for our customers. Plus, the

removal of pillows on Delta flights to domestic locations will provide a cost savings of more than

$500,000.

Airport Operations team members will remove the pillows from the aircraft the evening of March 14.

Pillows will be removed at field stations during the RON cleaning process and at hubs as aircraft arrive

and are serviced. Flight attendants can assist Airport Operations team members by informing them if

pillows already have been removed from the aircraft. ASA will donate the pillows to charity.

In another effort to improve passengers’ cabin experiences, ASA will test a program with Hoky

sweepers. A Hoky sweeper will be placed on 10 aircraft for any team member to use to remove crumbs

from the cabin floor. The Hoky will be placed in the last overhead bin on the right side of the cabin and

will be especially helpful when the aircraft needs a quick sweep but is not scheduled for cleaning at a

hub or field station. The tail numbers of the 10 aircraft on which the Hoky sweepers will be placed will

be posted soon. This test is the result of team members’ suggestions for a quick, convenient method of

cleaning the cabin floor.

We want to hear all team members’ opinions of the Hoky sweeper program so please report your

comments using the feedback forms available on the aircraft and on myASA. Blank feedback forms

will be available in green folders on board the 10 aircraft on which the Hoky sweepers are placed.

Completed feedback forms should be placed in the red folder also onboard the aircraft.

Thank you for your efforts to make ASA the most trusted and respected regional airline in the industry.

Their full of Hoky....ha ha ...I would have thought that the bean counters would have thought of using Ebay to sell the pillows..heck they could have made bookoo bucks...everyone likes those little pillows..:)

Until I looked at flica, I thought you had written this thing as a joke.

Is there a delay code for people being ticked off that they have no pillow?

Speaking of that, I'm putting the first hoky I get my hands on on ebay.

Crew Delay. They showed up late and didn't tell the PAX about the pillows.

They must have been listening to my CVR. I always said that our problem wasn't that we were boarded by inept gate agents 15 minutes before departure and had to wait half an hour for fuel and bags, it was those darn pillows that were holding us up!

And the Hoky thing, well that reminds me of the issues I've had with getting a lav dump in Atlanta. They (whoever dumps the lav) figure that if they wait long enough the crew will get sick of waiting and go without it. Same thing will happen with cabin cleaning. The cleaners can now take their time getting to the plane, comforted by the thought that if it's dirty enough the crew can always clean it up.

Another marvelous idea brought to you by ASA

What a joke. Do they honestly believe that anyone of us will actually use the Hoky sweeper. Yeah, let me get right on that. 45 minute turn in Hotlanta, shoot 'is all good, plenty of time to eat my lunch, change airplanes, change concourses, take a bathroom break and oh yeah - Hoky sweep. Just another ASA on time departure. Dream on. Or are they suggesting one of our overpaid and happy F/As will sweep the cabin with a smile. Riiiight. So they remove a coffee pot because of w/b issues but can add a Hoky sweeper. Who the hel$ is making these rediculous decisions???

Actually, I've often thought that a dust buster or something similar wouldn't be a bad idea on the airplane. Instead of just moving the pretzel crumbs around to spread them out and make them look not as bad, they could actually be cleaned up. But, you're right, nobody would use it.

And I would have imagined that the pillows would immediately find their way to the break room for the rampers to sleep on when they aren't watching the football/baseball game or Jerry Springer.

CMR has had the sweepers for a long time. It's a good addition to fill up the overhead compartment that they were trying to free up by removing the pillows. I'm sure the pax would rather rest their heads on a nice sweeper.

Seriously, though, the thing never leaves the compartment. I have occasionally tried to use it while riding a nice Starbucks high and all I can say that it spreads pretzel crumbs much more effectively than your feet.

Also, the 2 ft long metal handle pops right off and could be used by pax as a very effective weapon. I almost killed a rampie one night when I tried to shake the crumbs out of it and the handle separated. The sweeper head fell off the jetway and nearly conked the poor guy collecting the trash.

look at the date on the pillow announcement.. apparently written almost a month ago. speed and efficiency in corporate communication.

Our managment is on the ball, with the savings of the logo lights and now the $500,000 for this. Yet they will still and try and sell on the fact that they dont have any money to pay us in a new contract. It is contract time lets not settle.

The worst part it that they're telling newhire FAs that it's required for them to do it.

I can't bring my golf clubs on board because of security reasons. A pax can shear the handle off the sweeper, and have quite a spear though.

speaking of golf clubs, anyone have any recommendations on how best to bring them with you on a layover?

Those hokys will be going in the first FOD trash can I see at an outstation. Now, if I can just figure out how to write up "Missing Hoky" so I can ground the airplane...... hmm.....

Hey, right before you walk into bada bing lounge on even side of "D" concourse there is usually a FOD Trash can sitting there. Oh, and and I am sure pretty soon a memo will come out about how to report a missing Hoky...........

Scratch out "Titleist" on the side of your bag and write "HOKY".
