I have seen people fly either the outbound heading, or actually intercept the holding radial and fly that outbound when executing a parallell entry off of a VOR radial. Is there a standard or preferred method of executing that procedure with the airlines? Also, when is the best time to report established in the hold? In the above example with a paralell entry, is it when you reach the VOR and begin flying outbound? Thanks.

airline method: nav, holding definition, arm hold, enter. FHM please.

Intercepting the outbound radial can make recapturing the inbound very trick, especially if there is wind from the non-hold side. Check the AIM, it shows the recommended way.

Also, there is no official report of "established in the hold". That is just something that some controllers request. The actual report is "reaching a clearance limit".

The very first time you hit the holding fix, you have reached the clearance limit. As far as ATC is concerned, you should know how to enter a hold, therefore you are inside the protected area and essentially established in the hold at the first fix-crossing.

If you do the entry even close to PTS, you will remain inside protected airspace.
