I have always used the following rule of thumb, for standard holds.
Arriving at the fix, if the holding course is:
Anywhere behind me = direct entry.
In front and to the right = teardrop
In front and left = parallel
Is this acceptable on the sim ride in an interview? It is much more practical than figuring out 70 degreees from the outbound course on the holding side. It almost always produces the same entry, but occaisionally it's different if your heading is near that 70 degree mark.
Will this be frowned upon?
