Was riding the C/Howell bus the other day in ATL and struck up a conversation with a CAL capt. He was a very nice fellow and the discussion eventually turned to the future of CAL workforce.

He was under the impression that CAL will be needing to hire off the street maybe as early as april this year. All furloughs are back, there are deliveries coming, and only about 100 or so with interview letters at Ex/Jet.

Anyone else in the know...do you know?

This would be very encouraging news indeed, if there is any truth to it.

The latest bid showed about 210 or 220 vacancies after all recalled pilots are back. Continental will then hire 113 Express jet pilots to fill those vacancies. After they get through those 113 pilots there are about 200 or so pilots at Express jet that have already interviewed and been given "welcome to Continental" letters. Weather or not they take those pilots as a group, or ratio them with "off the street" hires no one knows. My guess is CAL will be interviewing and hiring off the street within 6-12 months. Good luck.

Word on the street is 6-12 months. The numbers do not add up to April, but who is to say they don't get a pool going. On the other hand an airline thinking ahead-well I could win the lotto too. The only glich is the future of CAL. Any dance in the chapters of the dreaded B word could throw a curve in that. Either way it sounds like Cal and Northwest (on an outside chance) are going to have to start replacing people. Good luck

Hiring boom June 2007, look out it is coming

Either way you look at it, it's still promising to hear that there will vacancies that need to be filled with additional pilots.
Thanks for the update, sorry, I forgot to check the furlough section.

Lots of retirements too at CAL, if you're looking for a mainline job this is about as good as it gets these days. Upgrades will be well under 10 years I bet.

Wish I didn't work at ExpressJet. :/ I'll send my resume anyway.
