I know several that interviewed over the past few months, but none that got the job (including myself).

Good luck.

Technically, nobody gets "hired" without the type (except maybe the scholarship winners or something). All you have is a tentative offer of employment that is contingent on getting the type.

You are "hired" when you are sitting in class with an employee number and an ID tag.

For what it is worth, I interviewed in 2002 without the type, but it was a lot more common then than it appears to be now.

I think to be correct no one is hired without the type. I was told to continue, and that I had 6 months to get the type. I was not hired until the day I stepped on the pro[erty.

agreed. I interviewed 10 Sep 01 w/o the type and was lucky enough to 'continue the process.' Got the type in Jaunuary 02.

Am not an interviewer and have no proprietary knowledge but from what I've heard/observed over the years, if you get the interview I would think that you'd be on an even footing with guys who have the type. Now, getting the interview might be exponentially harder, don't really know. We only hire around 30% (I think that is close, I'm sure Chase has a better/more current number) so the odds aren't that great, type or no.

And yes, I consider myself quite lucky to have gotten the "continue the process" call in November after 9/11. And frankly, waiting 2+ years to start worked out great too seeing as I was lucky enough to start the second class of our current hiring binge, gaining seniority(quality of life) fairly quickly. Although, I do love the "when is SWA going to call me for a class, I've been waiting 6 months, I could've stayed in the military longer" threads. 2 years, 2 months type to hire. And I was/am lucky. To paraphrase Napoleon, I'd rather be lucky than good.

I know a guy who was offered the job without the type recently. He was a line check airman on the E145 at ExpressJet....Had been flying it for at least 9 years. He was also offered a position at Jetblue at the same time and chose them.
That said, I don't think it happens often but it does happen. If Southwest is a goal of yours, just go get the type. Otherwise just fill out the app but don't expect anything, you might just get lucky.

Hopeing to make it in one of these days.....My year is up in July!

You don't need a type to work at SWA. Depending on experience, you could be trained to operate various equipment at SWA as a street captain.

Hahahahahaha

I interviewed in March 04 without the type, but didn't get to continue the process. I was not competitive at all, but knew the right people. Of course, knowing the right people can only get one so far. I guess it was not my turn that day. I got the type later but JB called first. IMHO, I would get the type. It's a nice write-off for taxes and a really fun experience at HPA.
Good Luck.
Cheers

We're probably the only two that got it.

Out of the rest, 50% proabably thought I was taking a swing at SWA, when any airline or business would have filled in the blank. The other 50% probably had that deer in the headlights look in their eyes when they said "duhhhhh?"

Tax write off? Hahahahaha...if you were making so much at that regional that you left, that you needed a tax write off, why didn't you buy a Cessna 421 and put it on 135 leaseback at an FBO? Now there's a tax write off.

I was trying to help Hyperboy out with his question. Sad that you have to chime in your financial expertise. Do you actually think that I got the type for a write off? Come on...just in case - No, I was not looking for a write off and no, one does not make much money at the regional level. However, thanks for the tip, I'll make sure to call you when I need a tax write-off.
cheers,

It's Possible, but Rare.

We are still interviewing people without their Type rating and then if they are successful through the Decision Board process you have 6 months to get the type rating to be put into the pool.

3 of 12 people that interviewed with me in April '04 did not have our Type ratings and we all made it through the process and are at SWA now...so it does happen. That being said, I think you'll get the interview sooner if you have the Type rating. Just comparing notes with others who've gotten the interview without the Type, it seems that you needed 3000+ Jet/Turbine PIC hours and lots of IP and Evaluator time.

Good luck and shorten your wait time by getting the Type. Not having the Type before the interview cost me 6 months of senority.

Don't waste your money on the type.

SWA hires based upon a pure HR interview. If the HR department selects you, then you'll have up to six months to buy the type.

Since you seem to know so much about WN....

We don't have a "HR Dept", we have a "People Dept". And you don't get to buy a type, you earn a type. Oh and one more thing...the CP's hire the pilot not the People Dept, I mean the HR Dept.

Your chances may be influnced by what squadron you're in............

It may not be an gimmie checkride, but they WILL give you a bill for $8000. That's buying it.

You don't earn a type if you go to a type mill and shell out $7500 for one, that's called buying a type. You earn a type if your company pays for it (as they should).

Hey Ralgha I have never flown anything as small as a C-150. Is it fun and how do you get typed in it? Your company pay for it?

Check out Captain Big Shot. Let me guess. So cool you were top of your class and chose tankers because you're all about the Big Iron?
