A passenger armed with a knife attempting to hijack an Air Seychelles flight to the Maldives has been overpowered by crew.
The state owned Air Seychelles confirmed that crew had restrained a man on the flight from Bombay to Male.
The airliner had just begun its decent into the island and was 95 miles from Male when the hijack attempt began. One of the crew was injured before the man was overpowered.
A statement from the airline said: "The aircraft landed safely in Male with no further incident and all necessary security precautions are presently being taken."
An Indian civil aviation security official also confirmed that Maldives authorities had foiled an attempt to hijack the Air Seychelles Boeing 737-300. It was carrying 74, mainly Indian, passengers.
Two men are reported to have been arrested after the plane landed in Male. Reports said the suspected attacker was a 41-year-old construction worker. The plane has since left the island.
