Very interesting and informative post. I am a NWA furlough scheduled to return in March. My biggest fear on returning to NWA is to experience a furlough due to merger.

Could you provide any insight as to what I could expect from the NWA MEC or from management should a merger occur? How about if it was with a non-ALPA carrier (ex..AMR)?

Being a "tail gunner" (junior guy) always puts you at more risk when mergers happen, but the good news is NWA is on the cusp of a significant staffing problem. That means you'll most likely be okay.

NWA is chomping for some relief from ALPA to get pilots trained (including recalled pilots) over the next few months while they are jamming NATCO with 3 good-sized APA's, F/O's getting checked-out as IP's, F/O's getting typed to augment, and DC-10 bubbas going to new homes. They'd normally be able to handle it, but they put as much of our Annual vacation allocations in the "slow" first quarter.

They also seem determined to keep flying levels as high as possible, probably to entice investors into plunking $$ down on our kick-butt company! (Call now! Operators are standing by!)

I think that gives you some "pad", and the MEC some wiggle room to get all the willing furloughees back home, even if a merger is announced and a P.I.D. is established. That includes an AMR scenario.

Other factors are implementation of the Targeted DC Plan, which should encourage the senior pilots who own a calculator to figure out how much net they're working for...and a clearer picture of how secure the frozen DB is. I've heard guesses that as many as 500 pilots could be in the zone for bailing, but I personally suspect it's closer to 200, because management will not PERP guys in short categories. That eliminates the 5-months pay cashout they'd get under the PERP.

My advice*: C'mon back! We'll fly a stinky 5-day trip (all I can hold), and I'll buy the lager.

* Worth what you're paying for it.
 
Yes, and how about the annual hunting trip with the accompanying photos posted on the wall in the MSP pilot lounge? Risible indeed! I'd recognize that writing style anywhere...

Thanks Occam's. I appreciate the response. It appears I am going to be trained on the DC9 and frozen on it for 4 months (according to the contract). I am then able to exercise my displacement rights back to the B757. Looking at the active seniority list, I will have approximately 1000 pilots below me.
