Good Day,

Does HSV-1 disqualify one from attaining and maintaining a Class 1 Medical(FAA and JAA)?

Does the FAA test for this and do airlines discriminate candidates with such a condition?

How is one to comfortably have an airline pilot career and what is the FAA's tolerance and method of treatment?

Many thanks..

Regards

Medication Class — Herpes Medications

Medication Class Description:

Herpes infections of all types, oral, genital and skin (Zoster), may be prevented or treated with both oral and topical (skin) medications. Famvir (famciclovir) and Zovirax (acyclovir) are available in oral forms. Pilots using these medications must ground themselves for at least two days once beginning the drug, to determine there are no significant side effects. If none, the FAA will authorize pilots to fly on these medications and report their use on the next medical application. Zovirax also is available in a cream, which pilots may use and not ground themselves if the condition does not interfere with safe operations of an aircraft.

Medications Within Class:

Famvir (famciclovir) and Zovirax (acyclovir)

Does the FAA test for this and do airlines discriminate candidates with such a condition? No. This is not tested for any medical class. Discrimination is illegal based upon this condition.

Don't ask; don't tell. Makes social life easier.

Many thanks..
You're welcome.
