In January of 1941 Hitler's military was running over Europe. There was desperation in the US to get airplane manufacturing up and running. Ford Motor company visited San Diego to look at Consolidated B-24 production. After viewing the hand crafted one airplane a day production, Ford said we can build a B-24 an hour on an automotive style assembly line. On the banks of a small creek near Detroit, named the Willow Run a factory and airport was built, now known as KYIP.
Willow Run would become to manifestation of America's ability to out produce anyone in the world. The Ford Plant at Willow Run moved the B-24 production from Consolidated?s Craft Production to Mass Production. Ford despite opposition to the scheme from air authorities, undertook to mass produce the B-24 bomber, and by breaking production down into 20,000 separate operations, an a B24 an hour was finally achieved in 1944 (Brinkly 2003, p170)
Now this factory is going to be torn down, but if money can be raised the final 300' of the assembly line will be preserved as a museum. If interested take a look at the link below. Be sure to watch the video clip in the link. It is part of JUS's ground school. Comes under the heading of history
