While the very "direct" approach mentioned above may be effective in some relationships, many men won't respond very positively to that authoritarian attitude.

"We can't buy an airplane."

This will likely have a better outcome. Also, as you discuss the need for food clothing and shelter, pick up the smallest, cutest rugrat within arm's reach and set them on your knee, and pretend that you are doing the talking through the child.
