Hi.. I got the dreaded phone call today letting me know that I was to be furloughed. Kind of a shock to the system as this is the first time I have ever had to go through this. Anyway, the reason for my post is that a friend told me about the Workforce Investement Act (WIA) and said there would be information here on it. I did a search and couldnt find anything. So I was wondering if anyone had information on it.

Thanks,

well.....heres what i learned...

i hate to quote Bruce Willis but...
"Welcome to the party pal"

seriously tho im very sorry to hear that. i'm always in hopes that it will get better tomorrow. it should be getting better all the time right?....right?

so heres what i learned..

CALL the unemployment office OF THE STATE that your company pays you money from. not where you live in. thats who your claim will be with.

FILE an initial unemployment CLAIM. and get that going. that gets you money! for 14 weeks...or however many weeks your state allows. its not much but itll pay your rent and whatever bills in the meantime. mabye. i dunno where/what you live in.

ASK THEM about the WIA money. THEY KNOW -OR- at least know where to go to get the info for it. people on here have used that money to get a whole new type rating including the hotel and rental car for that time at the sim and what not. BUT, theres also advice to use it that way if you have a job already lined up. other advice is to use it to get another degree you can use in the meantime. or just buy alot of beer and get drunk. return the cans and its more profitable that way than buying corning glass stock.

this whole time the unemployment people will be expecting you to actively look for work. just blitz the market with resumes and pray. its all i can do for myself here. no calls yet. good lookin resume too.

seriously we're all sad to hear another one of us has been let go. I hope you find something soon. we're all praying for each other. Good luck!

Just an FYI. I too was furloughed, and I compared the unemployement payments in the state in which I was based vs. the state in which I lived. The difference being 200 bucks a week vs. over 400 bucks a week. I chose the latter which was in the state in which I lived. Additionally, I coordinated my WIA funding in my home state as well. So, you do have other options.

Do a search in this forum or maybe the General, I can't remember. But in any event, you will get most of the information you need here to help you get started. To reiterate what Airpirateob said, GET yourself on unemployment ASAP. In NY, it's a requirement that you be on unemployment in order to initiate a WIA funding application.

Good luck.

As for unemployment, it can go several different ways. If you were based in one state from the period beginning one year ago and ending six months ago, file your claim with either that state or the state in which you reside, whichever one pays more.

If you were based in more than one state during that time, you may do better having the state in which you reside file a multi-state claim. However if most of that time was spent in one state and they pay more, you should file with that state.

One thing that I learned well was that the unemployment office was completely unknowledgeable when it came to the way pilots are based and paid. As for me, the State of New Jersey told me multiple times that they could not file a claim since I did not work in New Jersey during that period. I had, however worked in three different states, and the one state in which I was based the longest would only pay half of what the maximum was in NJ. I had to insist that NJ file a multi-state claim in order to get a full check.

As far as WIA funds, NJ was extremely tight with that money. If I wanted to take a college class it would have been OK, but no type ratings. A better bet might be the Federal Emergency Grant which was reinstituted after 9/11. If any funds are still available for that, ask your local unemployment office who in your state administers the grant and how to apply for funding.

Hope this helps.

unemployment...

true. different states pay out differently. however the problem i ran into was this.

me:
Missouri resident
living in NY
worked for a Vermont company.

odd eh?
anyway, all the paychecks and commpany business for those checks comes out of VT, so i had to file a claim cause VT is who they payed unemployment insurance to. Would be different if i lived in NY i guess.

i called NY, they told me to call MO where im a resident...MO told me to call VT where the company was located. VT said i called the right place and set it up with them...but they pay much less than NY. so compare your notes and see what you can do but its imperative you do this now. theres alot of resources for this.

Hi!

If you search this board for 737 type training, some furloughed guys have been elligible for a LOT of money to pay for their 737 type rating (some, like me, couldn't get any). That may be worth the effort to you.

Cliff...how does the state decide to give one furloughed pilot WIA assistance while denying the next guy??

Furloughed! Too bad.

FDXFO2007,

Hey man! Welcome aboard Furloughed Express. Sit back and relax, cause there's nowhere to go. Enjoy your time off. If you don't have a degree, now's the time, cause there's plenty of it. If you need some flight time and can't get a job, go instruct or something. And finally, if you're getting tired of bankruptcies, furloughes and the such.... Change careers before you get older; that's what I'm doiing.

good luck with whatever you decide to do. Oh, and what ever you do, DON'T PFT.

IS it too late

I was furloughed back on October 2001. I went back to instructing. NOw I am working for marketing job in research.
I never did collect unemployment.

My question, is too late apply for WIA?
