On Landings

I found a neat trick i use all the time now with new students and new right seaters.

First, the student: The new student cannot see the centerline when he rotates the nose up for takeoff, or when he flares, and floats keeping the nose up for a proper near-stall landing. He just has not developed periphial vision to keep the airplane aligned with the runway, and he cannot see the centerline to know how to press the rudder pedals to keep it straight.

I have him line up on the right side of the centerline, so that the centerline is always visible just outside in his immediate left periphial vision, and it gives him a better reference to stay aligned with. After he develops rudder control to stay aligned, then we move over the centerline and develop periphial vision on the actual edge of the runway. As someone mentioned, a very narrow runway would have the same effect.

When you get into the right seat, that is what you have to do. Develop periphial vision on the right side. Line up so that when you flare, you can see the centerline just to the right, and looking over the right side of the cowling down the runway centerline as the nose comes up during the flare. You can "sight" down the right side at the centerline until that becomes natural, then move over onto the centerline.
