A friend of mine is in new hire school with SkyWest. He said that the instructors told them that TSA has been having a lot of problems with CASS and that it's a big problem right now and that TSA has been considering very highly to take it away which would be horrible news for commuters. Has anyone else heard this??? The instructors seemed very worried about this he said. WTF????

I believe Comair has had their CASS privlieges threatened to be taken away by the FAA/TSA. That wouldn't be good for offline commuters.

I think taking it away would be a great idea -- taking it away from TSA, that is. Let them deal with the checkpoints; they have enough trouble with those. Beyond that, they're so far out of their league it's not even funny anymore.

Check this out:

I was jumpseating in CLE, so I come through security with my "boarding pass" marked STBY from the kiosk. I get to my gate and the agent tells me after all the PAX have boarded there is a seat available... GREAT!

When the boarding pass is printed I HAVE BECOME A RANDOM SELECTEE (never mind I am CASS.... Cockpit Access Security System by god!). I am totally on the side of the agent as she explains there is nothing she can do for me, but I have to return to the security checkpoint and be searched.

(Now any idiot carrying a weapon at this point would dispose of it.... given prior warning that I am vouluntairly returning to security to ask to be searched!) I even asked if I could leave my luggage at the gate while I played along.

So I go to security, tell the screener what is up, and she sends me through the exit, U turn, and return to the screening belt. I get the "MALE ASSIST" and pat down and I am on my way per the official TSA magic highlighter and initials I could have done myself..... or so you would think.

Nope I missed my flight as the "random" search put me past thier scheduled out time and my company left me at the gate.

IDOITS in the TSA. I was already in the secure area, a member of CASS, and in uniform with a badge!!!! Ugggghhhhh ( I blame no one at the company for this).

You should have requested to see a TSA manager, as flight crew we are not suject to selectee screening. I have fought and won this battle a number of times. Just dont give in to those people, because they dont know the rules does not mean they can screw up your commute.

All of the airlines have an exemption code that they have to type in when printing out your boarding pass and/or checking you in for a flight. It happens to me all the time. Usually they can reprint it using the code to get rid of it, at least they can on AA and UAL. Just ask them next time if they have an exemption code, but I know a lot of gate agents are unwilling to use it (if they even know it exists) unless you are in uniform

...okay...for future reference, if we're just going somewhere for fun or whatever, are we still exempt being flight crew (off duty) in plane clothes?

not only that, but if you are an airline employee, flying on your OWN airline, you are automatically exempt from secondary screening.

The TSA has problems with anything to make pilot's jobs easier and safer, like the FFDO program and profiling people that need to be profiled!

The SSSS problem comes from two things: 1) The new requirement to get a boarding pass if your airline does not serve the airport or that terminal building (like Smith Terminal in DTW for NW pilots 2) A suspicious ticketing [i.e. cash [$0.00 fare to jumpseat is cash payment to the TSA] and booking within 24 hours of flight [you walked up to the gate] If TSA drops the boarding pass fiasco then the problem probably will go away.

I would think that somebody in TSA would be smart enought to figure out that adding to their secondary screening load with jumpseating pilots does nothing to enhance security and does not make the travelling public feel more secure or give them more respect of TSA.

Word. I don't know how many times I've heard, "We don't handle that; the airline puts that on your boarding pass." Either way, I sure feel safer knowing I'm not a security threat.

Airline computer prints it based on TSA parameters. We would have to wait too long if TSA had to use its computers for anything. And if TSA designed the printer it would take four people to run it -- with a supervisor to make sure they were printing correctly.
