Time for a new headset, and with all the brands & options out there today, what's best?

So what does everyone have and do they like it? Pros/cons?

Any websites I haven't thought of?

I'm going from turboprop to a corp. jet (either their Hawker or Falcon) next month, don't know what to expect with noise levels yet. Plus, more into comfort than the fancy starship enterprise look...but I would like to find something nice that lasts a while.

Thanks! :)

If your going to a hawker/falcon wait till you get there to know exactly what you want. What works now might be overkill then. Do those airplanes have an intercom? Most headsets we would recommend for regional aircraft that have intercoms would be useless in a business jet that is quiet and has no intercom. I love my lightspeed mach 1, but in an aircraft with no intercom and is very quiet, it would be overkill. Perhaps a single sided telex with an ear mold would work well.

Do a search on "headsets" on this board. You will find a TON of opinions on this. Generally speaking, there seem to be a lot of happy users of the Mach1, Clarity Aloft, Telex ANR 850 and Pro III, the Bose Quiet Comfort2 retrofit, and of course, the ever-popular and unGodly expensive Bose X.

You might try posting this question on the fractional and/or corporate board. You'll be able to get suggestions from people with experience in Hawkers and Flacons.

I fly hawkers now, a full headset is definitely overkill. We use the telex 750's (look like 80's walkman headphones with a pipecleaner attatched for the mic. They suck). I don't recall seeing too many hawker guys wearing full sets. Most operators supply the stuff with the aircraft unless you're going someplace you know that not to be the case. I do where ear plugs under the headset though, the wind noise gets old.

Call me a germ-a-phobe, but I just like to have my own stuff wherever I go. :) I've ordered a lightspeed zulu! Love it, can't wait!

It is an awesome headseat that is made from the Bose QC 2 and there is a mike that is put into it.
Southwest pilot makes them. Great headset with the lower price of a bose. I love it and the sound is so clear. You can also take out the mike and when deadheading or just non reving can listen to your mp3 player.
Cost is 499.00 no tax.

Sennheiser HMEC-25-KA works great in Hawkers. Works on two AA batteries. Works great even if you forget to turn it on like I do half the time.

Yes, they are very nice, but they aren't TSO'd. My company specifically mentions that you MUST use a TSO'd headset.

Check yer manuals...

Telex PEV-77 with a custom ear mold, and an earplug in the other ear. And a hand mike.

I have seen NWA Cargo guys with this headset, and have been thinking about getting one. Does it offer any noise protection at all, even if it is the same as an ear plug? I am probably going to end up doing what you are doing so I don't have to have the speaker at ridiculously loud levels.

Metro:

My earmold has a "Noisebraker" insert included, so it functions as an earplug as well. I am fortunate to live in the city where the lab is, so I went there to have my ear mold made, and told them I wanted noise attenuation included in my PEV-77 earpiece. I wear a custom-fitted silicone Noisebraker earplug in my other ear.

I am pretty sure they can still make you an earpiece with the Noisebraker even if you don't live in town. You probably have to get an ear impression made and send it to them.

You can check them out at:

Hope this helps.

The new ZULU headsets look nice. Would like to hear some reviews from those on regional jets wearing them though.
