There's a standing bid out for 22 new hires: some for the 767 and the rest for the 717. Then there's another bid for 42 new hires in the Md80s, although I heard that instead they will be getting 4 additional 717s. So I don't know what the final numbers are.
 
Hal, do you know if there are going to have more classes in june after this next one? Do you also know if there are more interviews coming up?
 
How many newhires so far on property?

If they are looking at 60 something, how many of that with the June second class are already there?

And any idea on future hiring plans once you are past this growth(ie. Airbus.)

For those of us not in the know, how many MD80s is HAL expected to get and by when? That's good news.

And yes, I hope a bunch of the ex-Aloha pilots get hired and stay in the area.

Don't know about further classes - we only know about the June 2nd class by the grapevine. Nothing official from mgmt. Interviews are continuing.

Is HAL helping out their Aloha ALPA buddies???

The Aloha pilots don't get preference just because they are Aloha, however since they fulfill the requirements quite well (i.e. Hawaii connection, lots of jet time, recommendations from HA people) there are quite a few of them in the classes - well above 50%.

How many newhires so far on property?

11 in the first class - they're in sim for the 717 now. Word is 18 newhires start tomorrow for a total of 29.

And any idea on future hiring plans once you are past this growth(ie. Airbus.)

It's all unknown for now. We really won't know until the planes are on their way.

how many MD80s is HAL expected to get and by when?

The MD-80's aren't coming. We're now going to get four additional 717's instead of the MadDogs. That will reduce the hiring a little for now - more like 52 or so instead of 64 since we won't need additional check airmen or separate reserve staffing. The bid for the MD-80's hasn't been cancelled yet, but that's just because the final signatures on the 717 purchase haven't been inked. They are coming however; we've already ordered the interiors for them.

Good luck with the interview if you get it. It's the most ridiculous process I've ever experienced. Introduce your neighbor, put on a hat and tell us about yourself...are you kidding me? I was in the 1st. grade once before. These HR women are a joke, they're not even from HI. and then you've got Dr. Fargas the wizard psychologist that HA has contracted (thrown away money!) to administer a series of "assesments" so he can determine "what your talents are" if you get through all this which takes all day you'll get a call most likely the night before to come in the following day and meet w/ the wizard goofball Fargas. Now the job is yours to lose....all you need to do is answer a 900 question B.S. psych test. Dr. GBF. will then analyze the results and make or break you. If your not offered a class you won't get a call...that's it...no thanks for coming out and playing our game however, etc. The whole thing is traggic...what the hell has happened to this industry...over?

Hawaiian Expanding Its Interisland Fleet
Wednesday June 4, 8:17 pm ET
HONOLULU, June 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Hawaiian Airlines has announced that it will expand its interisland fleet with the addition of four Boeing 717-200 aircraft to better meet the needs of Hawaii's interisland travelers in the wake of the shutdown of Aloha Airlines on April 1.
Two of the aircraft are expected to enter service in September, while the remaining two will join the fleet in November and December, respectively. The additions, all being acquired on long-term leases from Boeing Capital Corporation, will increase Hawaiian's interisland fleet of Boeing 717-200 aircraft to 15.
Mark Dunkerley, president and chief executive officer, said, "This substantial investment in more interisland aircraft reaffirms Hawaiian's long-term commitment to serving the people of Hawaii, and will allow us to increase our flight schedules during periods of the day that our customers prefer to travel."
Hawaiian currently operates a total of 150 interisland flights daily between the islands of Oahu, Kauai, Maui and Hawaii.
The Boeing 717, with its operational capabilities and fuel efficiency, is an ideal match for the interisland market. "We're delighted to be able to support the expansion of Hawaiian's 717 fleet as the airline responds to the community's air travel needs," said Jordan Weltman, vice president, Americas region, Boeing Capital Corporation.
To meet immediate community needs in the wake of Aloha's collapse, Hawaiian expanded its interisland flight schedule by flying a long-haul Boeing 767-300 widebody aircraft between Honolulu and Maui as well as by flying an additional 717 usually held in reserve as a 'spare' aircraft to cover scheduled flying in the event of a delay. Hawaiian will continue these operations until the additional 717 aircraft arrive to make sure that seats remain available for interisland travelers. Hawaiian also began recruiting flight crews and additional ground staff to support its expanded interisland operations immediately after Aloha's closure. To date, Hawaiian has hired 230 additional employees, a majority of whom are former Aloha employees, and is seeking to fill an additional 160 positions, including pilots, flight attendants, maintenance technicians, contract service and line service positions. The bid for those aircraft just came out too. It's for a total of 43 new position, including a couple of new slots on the 767 (because of expanded flying). The bid that closes today is for 22, plus the 11 already hired, makes a total of 76(!!) new hires this year.

So there is a need for an additional 47 pilots. Do you know if they picked the next class, and how many?
 
I keep hearing that we were/are having a class of 18 that started this week, but no confirmation. Other rumors are that the class won't start until the middle of the month. But either way, they would be the second class hired, with only the 11 others here so far. That means we would have brought 29 into class so far, and have to hire an additional 47 and have them trained by December.

We in the flight department are (unfortunately) wayyyyy out of the loop in the hiring decisions this time around. We don't know who gets hired or when they start until usually after they're in class. Once I hear more, I'll let all of you know.

So, I am guessing you didn't get hired... Sure, that would be embarrassing to go through that, but I would just play along to get the job - it's called adaptation.
 
If you are that far out of the loop, I sure do feel better about not knowing much either.

As I understand it, another class will be starting in about 10 days and the notifications haven't been made yet. Also, if you interviewed and haven't heard anything, you are still in line to get a class date. The next one is not the last. The 75 pilots hired this year are not the last to be hired either. They are working very hard to get more 767's. Also they are looking for used Airbus 330's to proceed the 24 new ones they have on order. They have made it clear that the next area of growth for them is Asia. They are pretty solid inter-island and to the West Coast, more Asia routes seems like a good fit. SYD is doing very well and MNL is looking promising.
Hawaiian is not perfect Sluggo, but it is a very good place to work, especially so if you like Hawaii. It's not for everyone. That said, they got hit with the shutdown of AQ/ATA and have down a very good job dealing with the chaos that followed. Hiring pilots is just one of a multitude of issues that they have dealt with.
Right now, Hawaiian has the best management team it has ever had (again, not perfect but making a lot of very good moves) and with the shutdown of ATA and AQ, they are very well situated in the Hawaii market. Essentially it's like they have reaped the benefits of a merger (less capacity and higher yields) with none of the costs. In addition, Mesa just wrote them a $52 million check to take advantage of it.
This whole industry is like one giant chess game right now and who knows how it will turn out, but Hawaiian is in a pretty good place for now.

That's exactly what it is. They have a short amount of time to get to know the applicant and they are trying to make the best judgement possible. It's not like there are set in stone right or wrong answers, they are just trying to get to know the individual and see how he interacts with others. If he has got a chip on his shoulder they would rather hire someone who doesn't.

As a past class mate of HAL, you won't find a sharper, more knowelegeble guy than HAL. But a true gentleman and good guy he is! Good luck to all at Hawaiian
