Has anyone built or flown a Zenith XL?

I flew a Zenith Ch-2000 (I think, was the model), back in my cfi days. I remember it was really squirelly (sp?) about the pitch axis. You didn't have to so much move the yoke, as just think about it and it happened. I had a few students send me home, eating tums, after trying to teach them how to land that thing. But, for the most part, it wasn't too bad. (I seem to remember it having a big rudder and could perform pretty good in a cross-wind).

Don't know about the XL. But I know a guy with an older 601 (which, I think the XL has replaced). Neat little airplane but it would have to be in a dive to beat a 150 at cruise power.

hmmm the XL is a low wing with a canopy. Looks like a nice little cross country machine but if its slow like you say...

Looking for something for my dad that can be flown with a sport-pilot license and has at least a 120-130 knot cruise.

Cost is definately a consideration. Not more than say $30,000-$40,000

An excellent, easier handling kitbuilt is the Van's RV9A. Has a much better climb & cruise than a 172 on a 152's horsepower rating.

With a used engine & simple panel, you might make it in $40,000, but not the sports class rating. I'm wondering what actually falls in the sports class that can do 130 kias cruise.
