Handheld / Lightspeed headset issues

I am having issues with my Lightspeed 20-3g and a sportys sp-200 handheld transciever the "mic bias" of the handheld is only 4.5 volts and the headset needs 8-16 . I ws wondering who has successfuly used a handheld with any lightspeed or other high quality headset and which handheld you were using .At what range can your transmissions be heard with either rubber antenna or ships comm antenna ( switch box or hard wire ) Thanks
