A huge factor to Island living is "Island fever" similar to the term cabin fever. When I lived there during the 90's, I remember a lot of my friends feeling trapped at being on an island in the middle of the pacific. I could not understand it and when I asked them about it, it seemed they always came up with the excuse of road trips. Even back then it was cheap to fly to another island and even a flight to LA was not that expensive. But they could not wait to get off the island. I wanted to stay and wanted to come back. I will just have to wait and hope for an opportunity in the future to come back (no longer have a spouse to make that decision for me). lol
