"Christopher did very well in high school; it's just that he talked back a lot," his father said. "He was a smart-ass." "One day," he recalled, "he comes home and asks me, 'Dad, how much does a garbage collector make?' "

He just happened to know; he'd seen a magazine article that compared regional airline pilot salaries with other professions. The next day, Christopher went to school with the article in hand. After class, Mr. Wallace got a call from Christopher's guidance counselor.

"The guidance counselor told me how Christopher walked into class and said, 'Do you know how much a garbage collector makes, sir?' "

"No," the father replied.

"A regional airline pilot makes a starting salary of $18,500," Wallace informed him. "A garbage collector starts at $46,000."

"Do you have a point, Mr. Wallace?"

"Yes, sir. You said some of us inside here are gonna be garbage collectors. But we're gonna be making more money than pilots, so that's cool."

Rub some more salt in that wound...
along with some iodine and habenero
sauce...heck maybe even some coral
snake venom!

That old saying about "It beats working
for a living."? I wish that it were true.

Frankly, most of us here, myself included, would only last a few weeks at a garbage collection job. It's hard, honorable work that is often demeaned. The people that are willing to do it deserve good pay and our respect. We deserve good pay and respect to but we aren't getting it are we. The garbage collectors at least have the self respect to require a decent wage.

Sounds like the garbage collector not only makes more money than pilots but also makes more than both teachers and guidance counselors.

Maybe there's a future in garbage collection that's worth exploring.

I can't rember the last trash-hauler furlough either! You know one thing's for certain, they'll always be other peoples crap to clean up.

It's simple supply and demand. Garbage collectors don't demand what they earn. It's just that if they weren't paid that much, there would be a shortage of garbage collectors. Even with how much they earn in their first year, it sounds like none of you are tempted to take the job.

I tried but it didn't work out. Made it through the interview OK but when they told me I would have to pay for my Dumpster type rating I turned it down.

Are you kidding me? It's much harder to get a job as a metropolitan garbage collector, then it is a pilot job with a regional airline. Try to get the garbage job with ferociously enforced quotas, and civil servants running the show.

There is NO shortage of applicants for garbage collection jobs. Their unions have just done a MUCH better job of protecting salaries and QOL (EVERY fed. holiday day off).

We regional pilots are just a bunch of whores. I wish I had known that before I signed on.

Look ANOTHER negative guy who made the wrong decisions in his life and now P!SSES all over everything...um I have never seen that before...
You can always "sign out" if you like and get a real job....How about custodians they make about 30k a year...just tell every chick you TRY to pick up your a Disabled pilot who had to find another job because of Impotence!!!

It's all about the benefits. Yeah pilots get to travel for free and see new places, but garbage collectors get to find dead hookers and used porno in dumpsters. Christmas shopping would be alot easier too.
