I find it hard to believe that the guy was so completely unaware that he was screwing all the guys in front of him waiting to depart KTEB, but I have been wrong before.

Yeah, but sometimes you get SO desperate to get out of New Jersey...

He wasn't unaware at all. I am sure he was probably getting screamed at by the GIB to get his ass moving. I can't blame him for trying. TEB is a different animal than EGE though. TEB is pure saturation, EGE is a lack of an approach radar. As soon as you get away from EGE, there is no real problem getting a clearance from DEN or SLC centers. You can fire off 2 or 3 VFR departures without effecting the IFR conga line at EGE.

Sorry, I was referencing the fact that FAR91 you do not have to comply with the ceiling and vis requirements. That loophole will allegedly be closed with AC 120-91.

Earlier this year I was sitting in line at KTEB (story of my life) When a guy in a GIV who was a few in sequence behind me, asked if he could depart VFR. The controller said "sure, are you planning to remain VFR all the way to KSLC, because no one down the line has time to give you an IFR clearance." After a pause the guy says "yes." The controller then tells him that he can expect about a 45 minute delay for the VFR departure and asks if he wants her to cancel his IFR clearance, at which point the guy finally gets a clue.

We used to do this all the time going from Trenton to HPN on HVN and we weren't screwing anyone. The only difference was, we flew VFR the entire route. It was quicker and cheaper. There may be 3 Acft waiting to depart IFR , when we saw that it would cost us a lot of time and the Wx was good, we would just go VFR. No delay.

No doubt it makes sense to do it if you are going VFR all the way to your destination that is nearby (eg HPN). And you're right, you would not be screwing anyone since you would not require being sequenced with IFR traffic.

But. This guy was was asserting that he was going to go from KTEB to Salt Lake City Utah VFR. EVERYONE knows that as soon as he got a few miles to the west he would be calling up New York Center and asking for an IFR and crying for higher. Which means New York has to make a hole (if they didn't, we wouldn't have been waiting on the ground). How does ATC make a hole? Speed someone up, slow someone down and turn em off course, and last but not least........hold up a departure.

I'm sure the GIB was pitching a bitch about being stuck on the ground in KTEB. That is when I would politely suggest to him that next time we use KHPN or KNEW or try to depart before rush hour.

With the new "radar" coverage down low around KEGE I would think that things are getting better? I have not been in there yet this winter, but will probably be hittin' hard in the spring.

I have not been there in a little while. Do they have some sort of radar down lower now? I believe the lowest Denver could pick you up before was approx. 14000msl. ( don't quote me on that, might have been as low as 10,000 msl) Either way, because of that they could only have one on arrival or one departing at a time. Mix that in with ASE and RIL departures and it got screwed pretty quickly. IF they got Radar lower, that it will be a lot better.

Spring was never really that bad. The biggest problems were around Xmas, New Years, and 4th of July.

I went in there on the 19th of this month, it was just fine and dandy. Traffic going in was flowing nicely, everyone was happy. I'll be leaving on the 2nd or 3rd so we'll see how it is leaving.
