Oops

I dunno where it is but looks like a weak spot on the ramp. I've been close to this in the C5, granted that we're talking 769,000 lbs versus 89,000 lbs, the GV also goes into unimproved podunk airports a whole lot more than the C5 does. Anyone know what the max rated load was on the ramp?

So sad to see a GV in that condition though... :(

It's real and it happened in SSI about 3 weeks ago. The GAC folks called the recovery folks out of KC. Then the folks from BQK came over and replaced the wheels, tires, brakes and gear door.

The aircraft was departing to the west coast and had a bit of fuel on it. The airport authority is going to wind picking up the tab on this one.

The aircraft was only out of service for 3 or4 days.

Max rwy weight (4/22) is @ 60k with a note to contact the airport for a/c exceeding the limitation. I didn't find info on max ramp/taxiway weights but Im guessing it's stressed to match rwy weight bearing limits.

Thanks for the real info...:)

Here's a sat image. Pretty flakey looking piece of asphalt compared to other ramp areas. Looks like tie downs for LIGHT aircraft!

I wonder who told them to park there...? :cartman:

Why didn't the PIC didn't question it....? :0

http://maps.google.com

Put in Brunswick, GA in search bar and zoom on airport with sat view to see ramp on east side of airport. Direct link doesn't work...

Hummm... I know someone who goes into SSI frequently with a GV. I wonder... ;) TC

Saint Simons Island

I have several Golden Isles Aviation trucker caps, but each time I've been in there I've landed with about 5,000 pounds of fuel and departed with around 10,000 pounds, giving me a weight range of 53,000 - 58,000 lbs.

On that ramp, if I ever put 41,300 lbs of fuel and 8 pax on board, which would bring me up to my max ramp weight of 91,400 lbs, I wouldn't have to worry about being 130 feet short on runway - all I'd need is a plaque to mark the place where the G550 sank through the asphalt.

Unless they were morons (simply flying a GV doesn't exempt one...) they probably wouldn't load up on gas at SSI. Maybe going out with 20k plus 48k in BOW?

BTW, I will call myself a moron for engaging in a discussion on A.net on this subject. After reading 45 posts on whether or not it was faked by photoshopping the pics, I wanted to strangle someone! So, yes, I was a moron for reading an inane thread that long. I don't know or even care if the point I made was valid, I just wanted to get them to STFU! TC

Most airports when taking a full load in the G's will have you taxi on metal plates for support... Interesting info... Cool Pictures..

The aircaft was tugged into it's current location for fueling, it sank as fuel was added. My guess is that it had around 20,000#'s of fuel on board (half tanks for a G5) at the very most. I am guessing the aircraft weighed around 48,000#'s + the fuel, puts it at around 68,000#'s. They were trying to go from SSI to the West Coast (LA area)

From what I was told the ramp area that the aircarft fell through was added a few years ago. The airport authority had not surveyed the area in question because it was added at the last minute. The tarmac was put in place because additional ramp space was needed for the G8 summit that occured in 2004. The government required additional ramp space for the dignitary's arrivals and departures (secure area). The airport authority never got a chance to check it properly.

20,000 pound out of SSI is not that big a deal (the runway is 5,800 feet). We do it in our G5 on a regular basis.

I pulled up on the ramp right after this occured

You're not a moron for reading the thread.....you're a moron for thinking that somebody with some knowledge on the subject could get any of those whiny little kids on a.net to STFU. :D
