Anybody have a weimaraner? How protective are they?

Very high energy, loads of fun, great outdoors - probably not the intimidating/protective dog you want (but see below - any dog will do).

The German Shepherd is a good choice, provided you listen to what the good folks above are telling you - repeatedly. BTW, these things apply to any dog - even a mutt.

My 2 cents: Do not do protection/defensive/attack training if the dog will eventually be around kids. Do plenty of obedience training and give your dog as much time and attention as you can. Most thugs & thieves will wait for another target without a dog, rather than press to test. Other attention-getters: Rottweiler, Doberman, Pit Bull, Great Dane, Mastiff. Good breeding (temperament/hips) is essential. Among this group, I favor the German Shepherd.

Once you think you know what you want, do an internet search for the national club of the particular breed. Then call a breeder and just talk -- you will find no better source of info.

I'll vote for a Dobie

I'm not a dog owner myself ... the lifestyle of a single pilot just isn't conducive to dog ownership. My parents bought a Doberman about five years ago, and she's a teriffic dog. Dobies are very loyal to their families, and are good dogs to have around kids. My folks' dog will bark up a storm if anybody comes to the door though ... scares the heck out of most people. If what you're looking for is a dog that's gentle at home but scares people just to look at it, a Doberman would fit the bill. I'd have never gotten one myself, but the dog my folks have has made a believer out of me. She's pretty smart, and they did take her to obedience training, which I'd highly recommend.

Make sure you're ready to give the dog the care and attention it needs, though. Otherwise, stick with pepper spray!

Pit Bull all the way. I have one I jog with, perfect temperment, with kids, etc. She's a real whimp, but with all the BS the media has spread, she would scare anybody away on looks alone. She doesn't shed, and my wife loves to snuggle with her when I am on a trip. BTW, we never would have sought a Pit Bull, but our vet reccomended them. Just don't buy one, leave it chained to a tree in the yard alone for years, and then wonder why it escapes and kills the neighbor's poodle.

Well first there have been some great pics for dogs.

I have owned a few in my days the best protecter was by far the german shepard, my dog was loyal to me and me a lone .

He was very protective of his area, there was an incedent where
the bully of our old neighborhod cornered me one day while i was riding my bike with the dog beside me, the bully made a move towards me and the dog could sense that i was scared, so up came the fir on his back then the show of teeth, tail up is the last sign that the dog will show be before you release.

Upon hitting me the dog was released and the commaned was given,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, the dog chased him all the way home
4 blocks and past my house where my dad was standing he, my dad yeld at the dog but he keept going caught the kid.

the dog did what he was knew hoiw to do protect and serve..............

I'm all for having dogs around, my wife and I have two yellow labs. Have you ever considered a security system? We have had one for about six months and my wife feels much safer at home. I think we pay about $30 per month and i think there was about a $150 installation fee. If you and your wife are to busy to take care of dog this might be another option.

Both thumps up to silky terriers... about nine-ten pounds.
They are very intelligent, can be used to lead the blind. Don't see them small, they have tough bones.

I kept a silky terrier before. She died of old age a few years back. Best dog i ever had! I currently own a jack russell terrier. She can't compare to the silky terrier though.

The silky terrier i have, she just too great! A real companion and a wonderful bodyguard! Feirce was her growls, threatening was her bark. But not just that that attacts me. It's that with her around? No one can raise their voice at me! She will growl back at them. No violent gestures, she barks and treathens to bite. And sometimes, i think she knows our human language. When one throws out foul languages, even softly and gently, she too growls. Very obediant, toilet train. Recognises places around her... Place her somewhere else and she knows how to come back home, even know how to go to Granny's place!! Without our permission or acknowledgement of your existence not just to enter out home, you will definately not be allowed on our property. Not even a a toe.


Get a silky terrier!! Cheers to my pal!

P.S: A pomoraniam are territorial but very very temperamental. From my experience from looking after my friends dogs when they go overseas etc...

Belgian Malinois

I've been doing some reading and I'm very interested in the Belgian Malinois.

Any of you guys had one of those? I think I'd would have to send my wife to an obedience school. Once she completed that and was a bit more submissive I'd send the dog as well.

on average, 1.5 children are killed every day by guns.

I have to agree... you can't trust my wife with scissors, much less a hand gun or pepper spray. Besides, how many handguns wake up and fire warning shots on their own in the middle of the night.

How about a Rhodesian ridgeback. I've owned and been around numerous purebreed dogs in my life and I believe that they are by far the best all around dog on the planet. Males get to around 90 lbs and they are considered sight hounds who were breed in Rhodesia to hunt lion. They can run like the wind and are very protective of their owners. They only bark when something is seriously wrong so you don't get those annoying dogs who bark at every noise. The best thing is they can just as easily sit in the sun for hours or go for five mile run.

Most people are afraid of them from the start because the hair along their backbone grows backwards(ridgeback) and looks as if they are always on alert. They are not as prone to hip displasia as most larger dogs.

I've personally seen a male knock down a full grown buck. He didn't harm it, he just wanted to play.

One thing no matter what dog you get make sure that you do not allow the dog to run on blacktop, cement, gravel or any other hard surface. This will lead to very large vet bills. One last thing look into vet insurance. Especially for their first year. I pay $40.00 month for two dogs which covers almost everything and saves me from having to put down my dog because of financial reasons.
