I'm starting to teach a ground school class. I really want to find a model Cessna or something that has moveable parts--ailerons, rudder, and elevator, but don't want to spend a whole lot of money. I've looked all over everywhere, but haven't been able to find one, but thought it would be really cool to have.
thanks

Ideas

Kate,

Here are a couple ideas... nothing too fancy though. Are you teaching a large ground school class? If so, you probably want something fairly large. One idea might be to go to a hobby shop or online and buy a styrofoam electric r/c airplane. Just the body kit should be fairly inexpensive... $20-30 (my dad does electric r/c's so thats how i know). Just make sure if you do that, that you get one that utilizes ailerons (not just rudder).

Another idea would be to just build something from scratch. If you're handy, it might not too be too hard... and wouldn't cost anything more than some cardboard boxes or styrofoam. Just ideas...

Have that class on the ramp and use a real airplane.

edit...Hey Cory, I noticed that this is your only post signed "Cory" Me thinks this is no co-inky dink. ;)

I noticed this too, but I didn't want to be a d!ck and bring it up... haha :)

Is Cory a leghumper?

dick or not :), we've officially hijacked this thread....not to mention what we've done to Cory's attempts at being nice to a girl on a message board.

I'm surprised no one's asked for pics yet.

My name???

I don't claim to be the brightest person in the world, but I don't quite follow?? That IS my name... ???? Beleive it's in my profile, too...I must be missing something.

Oh stop it! lol... Kate is smarter than that. ;)

Okay... I was wrong, my name doesn't show up in my profile. But I still don't know what relevance my name has? Unless you think its someone else????

I don't even know who "Kate" is. Im new to the forums, but I guess I fell for some kinda joke here. Sucks to be the new guy sometimes lol.

Thanks for all the "useful" information.
The class size may vary anywhere from a few students to about 10. There are a few things we can discuss while on the ramp looking at an airplane, but it's a bit cold this time of year and there are a few other discussions it would be nice to have a small airplane inside the classroom.
Several weeks ago, I went to a local radio controll hobby shop, and the worker there wasn't very helpful. He gave me the "what are you doing here--the mall is down the street" look.
That avenue probably is the best though, I'll go back again and see if something works. I'm not very mechanical, so building something probably isn't a good idea--"now imagine that this is an airplane..."
It is pretty amazing though that a discussion beginning with trying to find a toy airplane leads quickly downhill to a discussion about dicks.
I won't get started on my opinions about being a female in a male dominated industry. That'll be a long discussion for another day.

It's not about dicks, Kate. The funny thing is that Cory started his post like this:

and signed his name. Rumpletumbler was pointing out that he doesn't do that in any of his other posts. So...what's different about this post? Well, it's a funny coincidence that he's replying to a woman. From what I've seen on internet forums, any female who's new to the board is treated like an instant celebrity.

Most of the time, it happens like this:

This is what we were laughing about.

EDIT: note that, after we chastized him, Cory played dumb and didn't sign his other post in here. HAHAHA

j/k, man -- we're just having some fun

I owe my most sincere appologies

Ahhh I see now. Apparently I signed my name just because it was a female I was talking to... and that means??? Interesting how everyone is a psychiatrist these days.

I guess I owe CFIKate an appology... since she's obviously a female. Good thing that the Knights in shining armor came to her rescue. I'm sorry if the use of my own name was offensive or was overly-forward. Gee, I sure hope that I don't get slapped with a sexual harrasment lawsuit. I can't beleive how innapropriate my behavior was (sarcasm).

Nobody thinks that it could have just been the nature of the post, or that Im new to message boards. But I know its all in good fun, so don't take this post as me being upset about it... now realizing that everything i say... which letters I capatalize, which punctuation I use... can all be construed to some kind of hidden meaning... that even perfect strangers can decrypt. I'll let everyone back to their overanalyzation. P.S. I got laid off recently... anyone care to read my palms and tell my fortune??? :D Sorry if Im synical... hard for me not to be, with all the crap that's gone on lately.

CORY (not meant to be offensive)

Guess I should post one more message... after reading that last one. Seriously, Im NOT mad... just sarcastic :-) Just having fun at my own expense too ;-)

cfikate-

AFAIK, what you're looking for doesn't exist. CFIs have been looking for a practical airplane model for decades. I've seen some great models that have been large enough to be seen and have movable control surfaces, but they've all been handmade.
Some solutions I've seen:
-plastic C-152 or Warrior model from the hobby store
-cardboard and duct tape model (works surprisingly well)
-plastic toy airplane from the grocery store toy section
-model carved from balsa wood

Depending on your creativity, you can make a great model yourself with blocks of balsa wood. Balsa is easy to sand to shape, and you can make hinged control surfaces with the little plastic hinges sold in hobby stores. Being able to move the control surfaces is key for an instructional model.

Good luck!

It is pretty amazing though that a discussion beginning with trying to find a toy airplane leads quickly downhill to a discussion about dicks.
