A great book! "Before the Jets" written by Joseph Reeves. It is available on Amazon. Story of transoceanic flying in piston powered C-54’s, C-118’s, and C-121’s. The problems faced by pilots who had to become Navigators at the same time maintaining the pilot qualifications in response to overseas deployments in the start of the cold war. If you ever wondered how Cel Nav worked this is book to read. If you have ever navigated using Cel Nav, LORAN A, and radar altimeter drift you will love hearing about how these guys succeeded and failure using this primitive methods, read this book. If you want to know what flying was like in MATS in the 40’s and 50’s, the Berlin airlifts, and the use of transport squadron’s in the early cold war this is a good source. I could hardly put it down, having been there and done that.

Along the same line, are two books just republished. The Left Seat by Robert Serling and By The Seat of My Pants by Dean Smith. You should be able to google both the title and author and find the book.
