Government Says Terrorists May Use Lasers

White House - AP Cabinet & State

By CURT ANDERSON, Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON - Terrorists may seek to down aircraft by shining powerful lasers into cockpits to blind pilots during landing approaches, federal officials are warning in a bulletin distributed nationwide.

The memo sent by the FBI (news - web sites) and the Homeland Security Department says there is evidence that terrorists have explored using lasers as weapons, though there is no specific intelligence indicating al-Qaida or other groups might use lasers in the United States.

"Although lasers are not proven methods of attack like improvised explosive devices and hijackings, terrorist groups overseas have expressed interest in using these devices against human sight," the memo said.

"In certain circumstances, if laser weapons adversely affect the eyesight of both pilot and co-pilot during a non-instrument approach, there is a risk of airliner crash," the agencies said.

In September a pilot for Delta Air Lines reported an eye injury from a laser beam shone into the cockpit during a landing approach in Salt Lake City. The incident occurred about 5 miles from the airport. The plane landed safely.

FBI and other federal officials are investigating. It is clear if a crime was committed or if the laser was directed into the cockpit by accident.

Steve Luckey, a retired airline pilot who is chairman of the Air Line Pilots Association (news - web sites)'s national security committee, said pilots are concerned about a recent increase in laser incidents, but do not know what to make of them. He said he has learned of two or three cases in the past 90 days.

"The most recent incidents appear to be aimed at pilots in the vicinity of airports," Luckey said. "A few seem to be intentional, and we're wondering why and what's going on."

Lasers can cause temporary blindness and severely damage the eye by burning the retina. The bulletin notes they are "relatively inexpensive, portable, easy to conceal and readily available on the open market."

Lasers are commonly used in a number of industries and are featured in outdoor light shows. A variety of more powerful military-grade lasers are produced around the world, but there is no evidence that terrorist groups have managed to obtain one, according to federal officials.

The bulletin was sent late last month to law enforcement officials and key government agencies and industries. A copy was obtained Thursday by The Associated Press.

Time to put on my geek hat! Don't ask were I got this!

CO2 lasers emits @ ~ 10 microns wavelength. Most AC windows are made from polycarbonate or at least have a polycarbonate layer in them. That is going to mean almost 100% absorption and therefore 0% transmission. A CO2 laser presents a much greater danger from skin burns and the like than from eye damage. The eye's aqueous humor and lenses are also opaque to 10um light and you would therefore experience heating of the epithelium over the cornea and not damage to the retina; which I while suspect would be very painful you'd probably have enough time to shut your eyelid and prevent further damage.

Also warnings or use of 5mW lasers (laser pointers) is completely unfounded. The extremely high (relatively, anyway) divergence experienced by almost all cheapo, poorly colimated 5mW laser pointers means the beam will be at least inches wide if shone on something as far away as an airplaine at tens, and hundreds of feet up. The amount of light that can enter the pupil from a "legal" 5mW laser pointer at such a large beamwidth is distracting but totally harmless.

bring out the giant "Laser"

More than that, it seems like they are great fans of Tom Clancy: in one of his books (don't remember which one right now), lasers were used to crash some jap AWACS.

In another book, a 747 was crashed by the pilot on the Capitol.

*sigh*

This poor ol' turtle's been stickin' his head out more and more. Just when I think I might be able to get up an' walk myself off this highway, along come something else scary and I gotta pull my head back in to hide some more. Sure hope no traffic comes before its safe to move.

I'm sure the terrorists are also demaning a hefty ransom of "one million dollars!"

"They are mutated sea bass."

You guys are forgetting what's really important here: as long as they haven't yet acquired the sharks, we're allright. But as soon as our country gets word of somebody attempting to obtain both sharks and glue--look out! They might already have the laser beams, and with all three, it is only a matter of time before the sharks have frikken laser beams attached to thier foreheads!

:)

Dan

PS-besides, what are pilots doing looking outside anyway. Apparently they don't care about crosswords. :)

Not just their "foreheads".....but their FRIGGIN FOREHEADS! ;)

Crosswords are for those that are under 12 and over 80....those of us in between(I mean physically here, not mentally) are reading Hustler.

Hint: check the escape rope hatch! :D

Just when I was having trouble keeping current on my landings........next memo. All aircraft will be autolanded.........Oh well, just 11 more years.
