Good communities around PIT airport?

Just assigned PIT, and need to move wife, kids and dog. Need to rent a home close to airport for low level FO position.

Is this reasonable, how are the towns around the airport? Can you be 15 minutes out and be in a country area?

If you,re PIT base it to feed US Air, I'd wait till at least the end of the summer to see if they will make it. Otherwise you may be moving only to have to move again.

I live in PIT and can comment...

On a low FO salary... and 15 min's from the airport.. that will be a little tough for selection.

Beaver county is generally more reasonable in price and selection. Just about ANY town in that county you can find a home to rent on a low FO salary. The drive will be at least 20 minutes and depending on how much country you want it can go much longer and lower in price. I have seen prices as low as $400 a month and averages in the $600 with a good deal of property.

Allegheny county is a different story and that is within 15 min's of the airport. Homes can be found in urban area's for $600-800 a month, some are in good area's and some not so good. A more country atmosphere is going to cost close to double in Allegheny county and be 30+ min's of driving.

Moon Twp, which is where the airport is located about 20 miles west of downtown PIT, is a great area. It is very rural, not a lot of traffic, with a mall and a hugh shopping plaza minutes down the highway in Robinson. Nearby, minutes south of Moon there is Imperial, which has some great homes and townhomes which a lot of airline people live. PM me for further questions.
