what is the difference between a GOM and Opps Specs...If a DO asked you this in an oral, what is a good answer?
 
The Op_Specs are the agreement between the operator and the FAA on what the Operator is authorized to do. The GOM contains the methods the Operator will use to comply with the Op Specs.
 
OpSpecs = authorizations and limitations (approved by the FAA)
GOM = Policies and Procedures, including, but not limited to, compliance with OpSpecs (accepted the by FAA)
 
Gom vs Ops spec

Ops specs are the authorizations that are approved by the FAA, such as areas of operation, types of operation VFR/IFR, types of approaches and types of navigation...etc...

A GOM gives the procedures and directions for employees to operate within the areas and limits of the ops specs and to comply with other regulations and the intent of 8400.10. In addition the GOM is primarily to define how an individual operator may prefer to accomplish any task.:)
 
It is always funny when you read the Ops Specs chapter in the GOM. The caption at the start of the Op Specs Chapter states these Op Spec are not part of this manual. Then WTF are then doing in the GOM? It is because as per above they are issued by the FAA and not submitted to the FAA for approval. You will notice when you revise the Ops Specs in your manual, you do not make a revision note on the revision page.
 
BTW, there is no 8400 anymore (at least not in true form) It has been replaced by 8900 for several months. see fsims.faa.gov

I can not seem to quit calling it 8400, I guess thirty some odd years of calling it one thing just does not go away overnight. The new digital rendering is an improvement that has been needed for some time....:)
