Sorry about the subject ahead of time since it really has no relationship directly to aviation. Anyone currently hitting the Calloway Big Bertha irons/woods and if so> is it worth the cost in your opinion.??

Was at Dicks Sporting goods earlier today and the X12/14 irons seemed decent but the original Big Bertha irons seemed just as nice if not better. Any thoughts or opinions.?? They seem to be the best with regards to pricing however the person working the dept. wasn't extremely well versed with regards to this line of clubs since he tried to push the Nike irons which to me seemway overpriced for the quality.


I am currently hitting the King Cobra irons and not "overly" happy with them and I am in a tourney in august and wanted to make a change now so I have ample time to adjust and get use to the new clubs.

whats your game like? they are very forgiving, i hit a x-14 2 iron, but play titleist irons otherwise. if you are a better player, you aren't going to be able to do much in the way of working your shots, but if you are a mid to high handicapper, they are excellent

Speaking of golfing poodles. I would love to see a hawk or eagle do to a poodle, what I saw a seagull doing to dead rat one day.

This seagull was wallking around like he was the DUDE, with this nasty looking, fell out of the garbage can dead for a week, smelly rat in his beak. He just kind of gave me a look like "don' touch" and he cocked his head back and just scarfed this rat down in three glugs. I darned near puked.

As long as you are able to get some use out of the clubs then I guess it must count...

That is what I have heard. I hit them in the indoor range today but really could not get a great feel for how they would work out though since the range is really not a great range inside the store to test a club. The sweet spot is so large that I would assume that even on a mis hit that they would be extremely "forgiving". I am right around a 8 or 9 handicap so a "mi**CENSORED****CENSORED****CENSORED****CENSORED**ting" the ball is not a major concern of mine. I am more concerned with how well I will able to "pick" and "work" the club inside 200 yards and if they are workable enough to allow me to "place" the shots where I want them.

The Nike tour blades seem to be much more "flexable" with regards to shot making capabilities but at like $799 or so for the irons they seem a tad over priced and not sure of how well I will like them. The new Taylor Made RAC irons seem pretty nice as well but not too sure if I would be happy with them.

I may see if I can demo them this weekend. I guess I just like the customer satisfaction and support that Calloway seems to offer to the people that use their clubs.

any other thoughts or opinions?

I'm assuming that you're looking for a set of forged irons??...I'm a bit partial to Titleist. Although they aren't forged, the Titliest DCI series clubs are great. I have an older (5 yr old) gold diamond set. This weekend I used a demo set of DCI 762B irons up in Cleveland. They have the feel of a forged head, but the forgiveness of a cavity back...they also have a very slight progressive offset. Great clubs...very light shafts. I'm an 11 hdcp. and I love forged clubs...especially the Mizuno MP-33s. Its too bad they have sweet-spots the size of a pea.

Off the golf topic for a bit, but I couldn't resist sharing this tidbit related to the above quote:

A few years back a couple stopped their RV at a Wyoming rest area to let their beloved pooch out of a stroll. Trolling stealthy in the tall grass nearby was a coyote. Needless to say, in short order poochie became the entree.

Lastly, on some "funniest video show" a young lad was playing with his pet rat, all the while dad's rolling the video camera. The boy set the rat down on top of it's cage, talking about what a wonderful pet he had, when out of the blue a red tailed hawk decided it was dinner time. Talk about caught on tape!

Back to golf, the best clubs IMHO, are the ones you play best with! I've seen guys drop thousands on Taylor Mades, Big Berthas, Tommy Irons, etc., and not be able to hit them any better than a cheapo set of Northwesterns. Just my $0.02.

If you have a chance to demo several different sets of clubs, try the new MacGregor V-Foil 1025M Musclebacks (they are blades). I just purchased a new set and they are the best clubs I have ever hit. I had never really thought of buying MacGregors, but they have really made a comeback with these clubs. With your handicap of 8 or 9, you should at least give these a try. I really think you will like them.

I hit the 12's....and love them. I hit a few at the local driving range and then went to ebay and found a complete set for $500.00 (what a deal!)

They may not have made my game any better, but then again, it sure beats the garage sale clubs I had since I was 17.

I'm hitting Mizuno T-zoid irons right now. Love them! They are a forged club with the feel of a blade and forgiveness of a cavity back. Never gave much thought to Mizuno, but once I tried them, I had to have them.

don't waste your money

I saw a test a while back in Consumer Reports where they bought all the big name drivers and tested them on a swing machine.
The Orlimar Tri-metal was the best performer and you can pick one up for less than $100.
Sure there were a few that drove maybe five yards further sometimes, but they weren't consistent in accuracy or distance even with a mechanical swing machine.

I've always used Taylor Made ICWs. They are great clubs. Not very forgiving but they work the ball well and at the time they where top of the line. But I didn't buy them. My Dad won them in a golf tournament. But I have to ask what are you playing with right now? If you want a consistant game you can't change equipment very often. I've only had 2 putters 3 sets of irons and 3 drivers my whole life. Most of my changes where due to growth. I only changed drivers once, and that was because my swing was not suited for a low lofted driver so I switched to a 9.5 deg loft.

I appreciate all of the replies and will continue to weigh all options and try to demo the above mentioned irons this weekend before I make my mind up. KSU, I am currently using the King Cobra irons and woods and have been hitting them for a few seasons now but there are a few areas with regards to King Cobra that I am not very impressed with. I question the design, quality, etc, with them and doesn't allow me to work the shots as much as I would like. Callaway seems to be leading the way with regards to design, quality, resale value, etc, etc, .... I am just not convinced that they are for someone who has been golfing for awhile. Seems that the sweet spot is more taliored to someone with a higher handicap that is prone to get more mis hits but according to them "anyone" can hit them and be happy with the irons.

ps>> goin to be stuck in TEB thurs & fri- any decent courses in the area that are worth golfing at.? I know Long Island has a few good courses but dunno if I wanna fight the traffic to get there.

I'll put in a shameless plug for Hogans. I have had the Apex Plus irons for 3 years now and they still rock. Forviving with every bit as good a shot feel as the Mizuno MP-14s I had before.

As for woods, I go old school with an 13* Taylor Made Tour Spoon and a McHenry Metals 7.5* Driver.

Thanks for all replies, opinions, feelings, etc. I bought the Callaway Big Bertha irons today. Hit them pretty good on the course today as well so hopefully I will continue to enjoy. Just not overly happy about the price I paid for them.

If you are not a single-digit handicap avoid blade irons. You would be much better off with a set of cast cavity-back irons. I currently use Callaway X-14's and like them, and I am a 15 handicap.

Thanks.... We always use Jet and should have asked them but decided not to bring the clubs along on the trip. Next time.! ! ! I know of a few on Long Island but seems always to be a hassle to get there from TEB. Did take the ferry over to NYC and did the usual which was aight.

Too bad I didn't know you were at Jet. I was there Wed-Fri of last week.

Another easy way to the city is the bus. We usually catch the one by the Embassy in Secaucus. Only $2, drop off at 42nd and Broadway (Time Square).

It's a little late for your purchase decision, but I have the older Calloway Irons, and my buddy has the new X-14's. I've used his and found not much difference between the old and new ones. Although I still find a HUGE difference between either of the Calloways and other clubs like Titleists, Taylor Made, TOmmy Armours, or others. When I bought the Calloways I use in 94, I tested them vs the other top brands and I felt they were much easier to hit, more fogiving, more distance... But I haven't found much difference between the X-14s and the first series of Big Bertha irons.

Also, that Tri Metal is the real deal... but I'm not sure about the driver. I hit their 16 degree (4 wood) and it is amazing. It goes as far as my old metal shaft Big Bertha driver, but not as far as my Taylor MAde T2 driver. It's ball flight is high, long and soft landings. I never had as much success using the Tri MEtal driver, but their 3 and 4 woods totally rock!
