I'm going to Vegas with my other half for six days !!! Ching Ching  I'm thinking of renting a 172 and taking an hour or so cruise to the Canyon etc. Anyone know of a good/cheap place to rent a 172 in Vegas ? Thanx. PS No laughing about the cheap part.

nothings cheap out there......when I went in May, auto gas was 2.30/gallon.....good luck

Go to any of the FBOs at the North Las Vegas airport. Beware though, they will require a complete checkout with oral before they will rent to you alone. You're better off taking one of their IPs with you. It'll be cheaper in the end without the checkout.

Gas is down to $1.99 off strip and about $2.10 on strip now..

Have a blast in town.. Make sure you contribute to the casinos so I can continue to avoid state income tax!!!:D

Don't you worry. I'll be lucky if I have enough money to get home after the first two days let alone rent an airplane. You wont have to pay taxes for a long time buddy.:D

Where are you staying? We stayed at the Monte Carlo, loved it. A more open casino, nice restaurant. Go to NYNY for dinner, and Bellagio for lunch. Both were great.

Are you going out for Aviation Nation?? http://www.nellisairshow.com/ I would really like to fly out for that.

If you are going to fly over the canyon, be sure to get a brief on the special airspace/rules from the FBO. There is also a Grand Canyon SFRA sectional chart. Use the colored side. The black and white side is for approved air tour operators only.

You can also jumpseat on Scenic and do an air tour for free. There are standby reduced rates for OAL pilots and their families for ground tours. Look at the Scenic website and call the reservations number to find out the costs and availability. However this might be hard to do for a little while as Air Vegas has just gone out of business and their sales department turned over everything to Scenic's sales.

If you want to see the Grand Canyon forget about doing it yourself, take the air-tour from Vegas. I'd recommend Scenic as they have the twin otters with the oversize windows, turbine engines (i.e. bleed air), a crew of two and a good multi-language tape narration system. They'll pick you up, and drop you off, at your hotel.

The tour I'd recommend is their Grand Canyon Deluxe tour. http://www.scenic.com/saws1gc_deluxe.htm I flew this same tour about 400 times in 1990 flying for another operator in the CE-402. It's a great tour which lets you see quite a bit of the canyon. Very highly recommended.

Well, I am sad to say, it's true, Air Vegas Inc. in North Las Vegas, Nevada is going out of business. I just called reservations and they confirmed what Jim said.

I am sad to see the current state of the Grand Canyon business. I flew the canyon for many years, even before the SFAR. Bummer!

God Bless all of those people affected by the Air Vegas closure.

Go down to Henderson and rent a plane from Desert Southwest Airlines. (They are very nice people). But, it will probably be cheaper to just take an instructor with. Have fun there and, don't bother gambling in the casino's. I always had better luck (and service), gamling in the local bars.

Thanx everyone for the info. I guess at this point I'll just take a ground tour. My wife has never flown in a small aircraft before or with me for that matter. I just wanted to impress her however, the last time I rented a 152 I almost killed myself so it's probably best I take the bus plus, it's much cheaper this way.:D
