We're planning a trip at the end of May. Anybody been there?

Going to fly into Lanseria Int'l.

Tech stop in Tenerife on the way down.

Tech stop in Malta or Cairo on way out to France.

Thanks.

I was there on a trip about nine years ago so my information is a bit dated. We stayed at the Sandton Towers in the western suburbs. A beautiful hotel in a nice (read safe) area with a nice shopping mall attached. I believe this was the British Airways crew hotel.

Fortunately our handlers (husband and wife team) really took care of us and we were treated to a nice South African Bar-B-Q. Plus, we had a mutual interest in old British cars (I am restoring a couple of Austin Healeys) and airplanes (he was restoring and old MG TC and a DeHaviland Tiger Moth. We spent a day visiting friends with old car and airplane collections. It is best to see Johannesburg with a local.

A must see is the Imperial War Museum, some neat airplanes to include a Spitfire, Hurricane, Mosquito and an ME-262 (two seat night fighter with radar). If you have enough time try to take in a game safari, "Thorney Bush" comes highly recommended.

A truly magical country. Take the Blue Train from (Johannesburg) Pretoria to Cape Town if you have time, it is world famous although pricey. I enjoyed Cape Town more than Johannesburg.

.....

Ive spent quite some time down there. Nice place. (and dont call it a BBQ, its a Brie (sp?).

Sandton City was nice. Plenty of good places to eat, etc.

We had a condo in Midrand, a suburb of Joburg.

The dollar was strong there, so I ate like a king every night.

Stop by Monte Casino, down by Joburg.

And if your feeling frisky, hit up the Teasers in Midrand, but only if you like hot, exotic foreign women.

And brush up on your Afrikaans! Mines getting better.

Rosebank Hyatt is nice....Lufthansa crew hotel. The Air Routing agents are very good. Lanseria is the hilliest airport I have ever been to. Look out for lots of VFR traffic.

Cairo can be a long tech stop. Lots of taxiing. I've been to Malta and the service was very good.

Ditto on the hills--cause a bit of "windshear" or mountain wake turbulence if you prefer, even for a 500K-lb C-17. They burn everything around there, so the smoke/haze can make it well below VMC visibility once you start descending through it, even though the tower is calling good vis.

Everything is very cheap there--so eat and drink until you burst! Hit an outdoor market and barter until you feel stupid for quibbling over 10 cents. Ditto also on making it to Cape Town if at all possible--beautiful like the central (northern) CA beaches. If you like swimming in cold water with the Great Whites, it's fantastic.

Everybody is fantastically friendly there. You've hit the "bright shining star of Africa" as I call it if you can make it to South Africa. In other words, you can skip just about all the rest of the continent! Trust me--I've been to more than half of them...

Just had a G4 go down there couple of weeks ago. You might want to use Dakar as your tech stop - 35 minutes on the ground! Lots of little stuff heading into Lanseria, be very careful and on the lookout.
