Hi folks(pilot). I am just wondering if any one of you are an asian(s) or know any one that is an asian pilot flying for the major or regional. I am thinking of taking a career change at 33 and am a private pilot. But everybody around me said it is unrealistic and I am a dreamer. They think it could be the language barrier. they never saw any asian flying demostic. "Do you think they gonna hire a southeast asian pilot for the regional or major". countless time I been told. I am having an uphill psychological battle here. Please help somebody ....

What part of the country are you in?

I've seen Asian pilots. They represent a minority but that has nothing to do with hiring practices but rather with cultural values.

I went to a university that is 55% Asian. Their parents tell them before they go to college, "you're going to be an engineer, doctor or lawyer." Thats it. So they do one of those three things in order to not disrespect their parents.

You don't see a lot of Asian pilots because of this and not because the interviewers are regionals are racists. The interviews these days are as fair as they are for anyone else.

If you have a language issue, you might consider using a language coach to help reduce your accent.

FYI, I know of a Korean guy flying for Hawaiian and I know of another that just got hired at a regional.

So don't listen to whatever BS people are feeding you. The only racist or discrmininatory people are the ones feeing you this crap. The people that work at the interviewing departments are professionals and are not racist.

I've flown with plenty of Asian pilots! If you are fluent in English, you're good to go!

I've flown with several American pilots who were not fluent in English! Don't worry about it.

While you may have some challenges to face in becoming a regional or major airline pilot these days, I don't believe being Asian will have anything to do with it. Right now it is difficult for anyone to get a job regardless of race. Who know's, by the time you have the time and experience to apply to your first regionals, hiring may be in an upswing. If you know what you are getting into as far as not making much money for a few years, being away from home several nights a month, don't mind comuting to work, or don't mind getting into an industry that is not very stable at the moment, then I say go for it. Many pilots do this job because it is very rewarding to them, and there is a possibility of having a great career a few years down the road. Have you thought about becoming a doctor, lawyer, engineer, or something else that pays well so you can buy your won airplane and fly for fun on your own terms?

Best of luck!

It is common to see asian pilots coming through ANC. While most belong to Korean or China Airlines, or the overseas cargo that comes through, that's no barrier to getting a job at any other airline as far as I can tell.

Good luck to you!

Very funny.. of course not. I the boat people. I am a true SVNamer...If you know what I mean.

I wouldn't recommend trying to jump into this industry. Not that great of pay, very unstable, gone all the time. But if anyone would have tried to tell me that 5 years ago, I wouldn't have listened to them, I had to find it out myself. If you want to give it a shot, don't think that being Asian will hurt you. They say preferential hiring doesn't exist, but I think everyone wants to hire a diverse work group.
