I had a whopping 150 hrs. turbine PIC when UPS hired me. And I'm a white male :)

The same week I got hired at UPS, I got my FedEx application and realized I wasn't even qualified! (1,000 turbine PIC, baby!)

I'm still sulking over that.

What's the latest on Hiring at UPS...I heard all sorts of rumors. The company wants to sign in a new contract by Mid March but the Union is saying not so fast.

How many new pilots is UPS looking to hire?

I understand the 727 FE's will be going to F/O slots when the 727s slowly get pulled out of the fleet, but UPS has not hired since 2001, retirements have not stopped, and the company reportedly is financially doing well.

It would be nice to see them pick up 1500 new pilots over the next couple years.

Actually, dont hire till 2005, by then I will have more PIC turbine and my FEX done!

Let's put it this way...

The company has the ability under the current contract to work everyone hard enough so that they don't need to hire. They continue to move crews off the 727 and onto the Bus and MD11. I can't quote a percentage, but most of the age 60 guys are going to the back seat....not leaving the property.

When the company is short of crews, like I hear they are on the Bus right now, they simply build the lines with more time in them. Some call it forced overtime, but it's all contractual. Quality of life takes a big hit when this happens and guys complain, but it's all contractual.

Until the boxes stop moving because of fatigue, the company isn't going to feel the need to hire.

The bright side is, when we do get a new contract, there should be a flush of over age 60 PFE's who just want out. Also, hopefully we will get better work rules that allow for clean week on, week off, lines and do away with involuntary stuffers....or get the ability to drop stuffers and not get paid for them. Either way, they will need to hire. I don't know about 1500 guys, but it will be significant.

Apparently, a company "mouth piece" got all giddy in an investor meeting and said this. Everybody "in the know" both on the company side and union side knew this was a false statement and it was retracted in the newspaper the very next day.

SATPAK77, what a selfish thing to say while UPS has guys waiting in the pool for over 2yrs waiting to get in, now you want UPS not to hire until YOU are good and ready.

Yeah Dav8tor. He was totally serious too.
