Just curious if anyone can enlighten me on why go's crews would be carrying both a kit bag full of ALL THOSE APPROACHES at the five airports they service and a nice roll-aboard full of extra swimsuits and towels for those long trips away from base.

Don't they all end up in HNL everynight? If not, where are they staying? It seems that interisland flying is not what they're packing for. Odd.

Aloha.

they work for Mesa and get paid Mesa rates to live on one of the most expensive places in the US. It's for all the KY they need to get through a 4 day trip with that company.

I won't go on a trip without an overnight bag--you never know where you will get stuck.

Maybe the company (or feds) requires them to carry approach plates for NYC and everywhere in between.

In case they have to divert.

It is for when they get stranded when the airplane breaks, and it will this is Mesa we are talking about.

How is it flying around Hawaii with a deferred APU?

Why don't you just go up and ask them?

If I had to guess, though, HNL is a reserve base only. The actual "flying line" bases are ITO, LIH, OGG, and KOA . . . and they have no reserves (mostly) at those bases. So anyone who flys out of HNL is probably heading out to pick up a trip on another island the next morning and sticking with it for a few days.

You know, vacations/sick calls, that sort of thing.

We don't talk to them. Haven't even seen one go crew walking around. They must be kept in some small dark room somewhere on the airport.

Must be great for them.

I've spoken to pilots out there. Surprisingly, there have been very, very few MX cancellations. Probably because:

1. these ex-Indy birds were better taken care of for the past few years
2. a MX base and mechanic is never more than 20 minutes away
3. there is a spare plane out there which allows broken ones to be pulled and fixed w/o fuss
4. Lots of spare parts and mechanics, because Mesa actually has to care about customer service with this venture
5. Money, apparently, isn't an object, as it's $$$-loss model is in place.

My guess anyway.

They need the space to move the local chronic around, make a few extra bucks!

Because it is too hard to get the shopping cart thru security.

You know, leave the cart under the freeway overpass, take the "dirties" to the hotel for a wash. Get a goodnights sleep, hope they have a free breakfast, and back to work before returning to the cart and the overpass.
