Getting current again?

I was furloughed shortly after 9/11. Other than a couple of flights in a Cessna, I havn't flown since. After sending out thousands of resumes, I was unable to get even one interview. So now there is some hiring going on but I havn't worked in aviation in 2.5 years. I was just wondering if anyone had any insight on how to get back in the game. Is it over? By the way, I am pushing 40.

no offense here by any means..

but if you sent out "thousands" of resumes over 2.5 years and have not gotten one interview you are either lying or are doing something seriously wrong.

I dont believe it.

Thousands of resumes and not even a call?. Hmm.. I agree with the above, something is seriously wrong. If you know someone who is a Cactus driver then have them give you a lor and walk the resume in. AWA has taken quite a few of the furloughed guys in recent time so why not give them a shot? With the aircraft listed on your profile you should atleast be marketable to get the interview if you have any contacts there. Air Tran, ATA, are also hiring.


40 is nothing, you got 20 good years left.

Allright, I may have exagerated thousands but at least 5 or 10 resumes a week for the last 2.5 years. Some weeks I was sending 5 or ten a day. Not one response. I've gotten some applications, filled them out, then nothing. At this point I'm so far out of currency wtf can I do. I read about all these people getting interviews with a lot less time and wonder what else I can do. Don't get me wrong, I'm happy for them but I just don't get it. Can the 121 experience be hurting me? Who knows?

I do not think in anyone's wildest imagination could one come to the conclusion that your 121 time is being viewed as a negative factor and keeping you from getting to the interview. As I previously stated I would try to get in touch with the contacts that you have within the industry and have them walk your resume in to the right people, this seems to be what it takes to get a job outside of flying props and with your past experience I surely would not want to take a step that far back.

Have someone outside of your immediate family look over your resume. Ask for pointers and even criticisms. There might be something that is coming through in print that indicates your current mindset, which is not what prospective employers want to read. You have to be assertive without being overbearing. You are the one with the talents and experience...make sure they view you, on paper atleast, as a possible asset. If I am off the mark then just take it for what iit is worth.

If you are serious about staying in this business or thinking about a career change prospective employers look for certain expressions in your resume. Don't ever sell yourself short. Be positive in all of your contacts and try to leave them with the impression that if they don't hire you they would be making a mistake without being too forceful..
