I heard the average payout for 9-11 is 1.4 milliom per person the the family of victims- family of military killed in action is less than 10,000 plus a few hundred for eash child per month. Who is complaining that its not enough? The 9-11 families!!!

310,

While I agree with your sentiment, your numbers are off. SGLI (GI insurance) defaults to 250,000. Not much, but it's not 10K. There is also a death gratuity of 8K for funeral expenses and lost pay and wages for any surviving spouse for the rest of their life (unless they re-marry).

Still not enough, though.

Remember the Valuejet crash?

I do remember an article in a paper where they were discussing how a fatal accident on a major airline would net the survivors about 1.5 million each. The issue with valuejet was that it was a discount carrier and that the passengers were discount people and that the insurance companies were going to limit the damages to less than a million because discount customers were WORTH less. They figured this based on the average pay scales of people travelling on the discount carriers.

Tort reform. Concur. But not just limiting award size. Also need a limit on lawyer fees from class action lawsuits. Shouldn't be having a scumbag firm getting 50 million bucks for suing a company over their stock price when each shareholder only gets 50 cents.

But what about the root cause here?

This whole tragic situation clearly calls for nationwide licensing and registration of box cutters.

Where's Sarah Brady when you need her?

Yes the lawyers are shameless in their pursuit of profit but it is the mindset and decisions of the average public that allows this. If nobody gave in to the temptation to sue then the lawyers would have no business and would have to look elsewhere for work.

Until people are willing to look to the future, not the past, and give their fellow man a break, nothing will change. It is the moral deacay of society as a whole which drives the success of lawsuits like this one.

I believe Airlines should be more responsible. Heck, I believe all big business should be more responsible. It is the same moral decay that allows CEOs to make decisions not in the best interests of their company or employees but in their own self interests.

Again, until our integrity as men and women changes, it will only get worse.
