Russian infantry squad following an APC (BTR?) in Afghanistan hit by remote detonated mine. Pre-9/11.

On a side note ... the guys who detonated it are probably some of the same people now cooling their heels in Gitmo.

:D

Whoever wrote the caption disagrees with you. 'Says this footage is from 2001...a pair of GBU-16 LGB's dropped by F-14's.

There are some problems with the caption for that series of images:

- 4th group is a Psyops unit and would not have any Forward Air Controlers.
- When I served, the Army had Forward Observers for field artillery but the Forward Air Controller was a flight position for the Air Force, not the Army.
- If the Army deployed some kind of intelligence aviation asset, it would be from a military intelligence aviation unit not the special forces!
- The only reference I could find to similar operations involving Taliban was from CNN:

According to sources, U.S. troops, Special Operations forces, called in air support after an Afghan militia group that they were accompanying received fire and returned fire on the ground.

A couple of 500-pound bombs were dropped on suspected Taliban militia fighters in this area in southeastern Afghanistan near the Pakistan border. At least 14 enemy were killed according to a statement from the U.S. Central Command. We're told that AV-8 Harriers and F-16s from the U.S. Air Force dropped 500-pound bombs on the locations.

I could be wrong but I seem to recall seeing this series of images long before 9/11 - maybe sometime in 1999. At the time it was touted as being an ambush by Mujahadin on Russian soldiers during the Russian occupation of Afghanistan in the 80's.

Yes it is definitely hitting a mine. Those pics are from late 80s in Afghanistan

Yeah, those pics have been around for a long time. We had a discussion here just last week when someone posted the same link you put up. You know how the internet is ... always someone making up stuff, usually about pictures of politicians, though.

However, as I said last week about the pic ... I do get a warmer and fuzzier feeling by imagining it is the Taliban on the receiving end of an F-16s load of goodies. :D

Anyone have a link to the gun camera video showing the effect of an Apache's 30MM chain gun on Fedeyeen terrorists? I have it on my computer, but I don't know where it's hosted.

All I can say is, it's quick and painless!

Hello,
By the look of the blast pattern, it appears to be a mine vice an aerial delivered munition. Sure sucked to be one of the poor slobs riding that thing...

Am I missing something ?

Uh, no Chas. I appear to have taken the side of the Apache drivers in ShawnC's post...as well as all other Americans. See, the phrase "couldn't have happened to a nicer bunch of guys" was a sarcastic remark directed at the Iraqi Fedeyeen terrorists being torn apart by 30mm rounds in the dead of night. These brutal thugs deserve whatever happens to them.

Got it?
