I'm pretty sure that was just a "DBA" name and not a legal name change. From Wikipedia:

"With its new routes, the airline re-branded itself as Northwest Orient Airlines, although the legal name of the company remained Northwest Airlines."

The same information was published in the World Traveler magazine a few years ago for the 75th anniversary celebration.

Really? I just checked Wikipedia, and it said the old name used to be Delta.

Oh, wait, somebody changed it back.

Nevermind...

(HINT: Wikipedia is not a reliable source of information. Interesting and fun to read? Sure. Covers topics you might not find elsewhere? You bet. The definitive source on anything? Not even close.)

Yeah, I'm aware, which is why I referenced NWA's own in-flight magazine also.

BTW from Airchive.com

July 3, 1947
Northwest changed its name to Northwest Orient Airlines in 1947 when it inaugurated flights to Asia. Initially NW utilized Douglas DC-4s, before changing to Boeing B-377 Stratocruises from Seattle and Minneapolis to Tokyo and Shanghai via Anchorage. The airline initially was slated to change the name to Northwest Oriental Airlines, but wisely
opted not to.

On the other hand WCCO says as you do it was only branding.

I hear ya. Growing up in MN it was my goal too. Almost got there being a member of one of the cancelled classes. Sad days indeed...
Get your stuff in with Delta. Supposed (and likely to be) hiring again in the fall (if the merger is not doneby then). Our Widget points NW.

Contract includes no furlough clause for 24 months after date of merger. (if ratified)
