Position Title: Aircraft Certification Systems Engineer and Flight Test Pilot
Department: Engineering
Reports To: RF and Flight Test Engineering Team Leader
Shift: First Shift
Job Status: Exempt
Location: Salem, OR
Position Summary: Flight test and certify new avionics systems installations in FAR (Federal Aviation Regulations) part 23, 25, 27 and 29 aircraft. Assist in the development of documentation in support of the flight test and certification of new avionics system. Coordinate with other Garmin Certification staff and FAA Aircraft Certification Office to assure system certification.
Essential Functions
Define and execute flight test plans and detailed flight test cards in support of avionics development and certification projects
Maintain records of flight test activities and provide timely communications of flight test results to other engineering team members
Define applicable regulations and provide guidance related to cockpit human factors and all other aspects of avionics performance and operation
Analyze regulatory and safety aspects of new avionics systems including installation and operation
Assist in the development of Fault Hazard Analysis and System Safety Analysis documentation in support of aircraft certification projects
Assist in the preparation and verification of new avionics installation documentation, operations manuals, training material, and other certification documents
Other Responsibilities
Accept and complete projects and other miscellaneous aircraft engineering duties as assigned
Assist in the communications and coordination with FAA certification staff as required
Education, Experience, and Skills Required
Bachelor of Science in Electrical, Mechanical, or Aerospace Engineering
Experience in avionics installation design, flight test, and certification
Detailed knowledge of FAA regulations applicable to avionics operation and certification
Thorough understanding of commercial avionics installation and operation
ATP rating with 1500 hours minimum flight time with previous avionics flight test experience (other flight test experience will be considered)
Strong organizational skills and strong written and verbal communications skills
Be familiar with the STC (Supplemental Type Certificate) process
Desirable Qualifications
FAA Systems and Equipment DER and/or Flight Test Pilot (Designated Engineering Representative) authorization
Formal Flight Test School training
