I bought into an acft with a Garmin 400GPS. The unit is not connected to the HSI and there are no external warning lights. I know that this cannot be used for IFR under part 135, however is it legal to use it under part 91 to fly GPS approaches if you have a current data base and use the CDI that is integral to this GPS? This GPS unit itself is certified for IFR.

I don't think so. It has to be hooked up VIA the correct TSO and slaved to y our HSI.
