Bankrupt Frontier Airlines will ground seven planes and reduce seats by 17 percent as it scrambles to blunt the effect of rising fuel prices.
The moves could result in 700 or more job cuts in Denver — which is about 17 percent of its local work force — although the carrier said it is still determining how many positions will be affected.
The carrier also will look to give up some gates at its hub in Denver International Airport, where it ranks as the second-largest airline.
Frontier joins a long and growing list of airlines that are trimming capacity and shedding planes amid high fuel costs.
The company did not say how much it expects to save by elminating roughly two dozen flights.

If I were on the the chopping block, I would personally appreciate the oppurtunity to continue to work and collect a paycheck while searching for another job. Sure beats getting booted in the as;s on the way out with little warning.

It can be looked at both ways. To over simplify, either you have done something wrong and are getting what you deserve or, if you endure this event and continue to be a good person, something wonderful will come along later and make up for this setback.

You couldn't just say, "Best Wishes" and leave it at that? Another prediction. SW is not in a position to pick up all the slack in Denver. Oh, they will grow that's for sure. However, even with their cheap tickets, capacity will shrink and prices will go up in Denver...that will help us out. The whole purpose of our cutbacks is to make sure we get through the slow down of the fall/winter travel months. With the cut backs we''ll be around longer than you think. Even the doom and gloom "experts" are starting to acknowledge we'll be around. Yes, we will be a "whole different animal" compared to what you see today. Our present managment is not the same group of people (for the most part) who helped get us into this mess...fuel prices high or not. If not for the new group I dont think we would even be around today...definitely not by summers end. I'm sure they have factored $150'ish oil prices into their equation. I know, oil can only go so high and then we are done. No official details have been released as of yet, but I'm hoping that in the next few weeks we'll get exact numbers pertaining to cutbacks company wide. Our WARN letters go out Monday; however, receiving one doesn't mean one is being let go. I also know our Union and management are have been meeting for some time now with regards to furloughs. They are looking at Long term LOA'S, reducing line values, etc...in order to save jobs. I'd rather stay here with cutbacks than be out on the streets looking for a flying job right now. We'll keep our fingers crossed.

Another example of how the F9 guys screwed themselves without realizing it. No offense to the Lynx boys but you should be the ones hitting the street instead of the "mainline" boys.

Stratus, The industry has not historically been kind to the Frontiers. You are really caught in no mans land. Too small to succeed in this difficult environment. It is a shame. You are a good company with great folks working for it. Unfortunatly all your wishing and hoping will not make the difference. You are caught between a rock and an 800lb gorrilla. The deck is stacked against you. You might limp along for awhile, but all the fundementals are working against you. Good luck to us all.

Just curious...

I've seen it several times. It always hits by surprise, probably because a slow workup to a shutdown chases customers and vendors away.

You guys spun the news about the German bank waiving loan covenants on your spare part collateral, but that was only one in a whole field of land-mines.

In the end, your bondholders are the ones resting Frontier's testicles in their fist. There are all sorts of covenants, or loan requirements that allow senior lenders the ability to 'call' a loan with no notice. BK court offers a lot of protection, but things can go south very fast.

I suspect your CEO is "dialing for dollars", trying to get another business (hopefully an airline) interested in partnering up and weathering the storm.

Good luck though. Although I'm doom-and-gloom, that doesn't mean I can't put myself in the shoes of guys quivering about their next paycheck and health insurance for their kids.

Been there, done that. My only advice is to be proactive, don't wait for the guillotine to drop.

Although trite, "Who moved my cheese" is an excellent review of how standing in one spot while the world collapses around you is not always the best choice you can make.

The cheese moved, don't worry about fault, just go find some new cheese.
