French Lawyer: I'll Defend Saddam

Saturday, March 27, 2004

PARIS — A French lawyer, known for defending terrorists and a Nazi leader, said Saturday he will defend Saddam Hussein.

Jacques Verges told France-Inter radio he had received a letter from Saddam's family requesting him to defend the former Iraqi leader in court.

The letter read: "In my capacity as nephew of President Saddam Hussein, I commission you officially by this letter to assure the defense of my uncle," Verges said. He did not name the person who sent the letter.

U.S. officials have said they will bring Saddam to trial for alleged crimes against Iraqi people. But the location of any trial and its format and date have not yet been decided.

Saddam is being held by U.S. forces at an undisclosed location.

Verges has defended Venezuelan terrorist Carlos the Jackal, whose real name is Ilich Ramirez. He gained international notoriety during the Cold War for staging a string of deadly bombings, assassinations and hostage seizures.

The French lawyer also defended, Klaus Barbie, a Nazi Gestapo chief in France in World War II, who was convicted of crimes against humanity in Lyon, France.

Saddam's counsel

This lawyer sure has the client list!

Does he get his clients through referrals or only through the Yellow Pages?

plus, someone's gotta defend the right wing nazis, right?

I'm curious, Vlad. In your wide range of experirence in history and politics, how were you led to link "nazi" and "right wing?"

hmm, let me see, last time I checked, bigotry, homophobia, separatism and denial of reality were all traits of the right wingers

TB:

Most classes I've ever taken and books I've ever read use communism and fascism to illustrate the opposite extremes of the political spectrum.

But what do I know, I have a degree in history from a college in the liberal Northeast?

Put down the Jim Jones liberal Kool Aid.

You're the one who needs to check again and stop drinking the GOP kool aid. The traits Vlad describes has always been traits of the far right. Read your history book again.

I think you guys are off the chain if you equate facism with the "right."

But I don't expect to make any headway in changing your minds.

I also don't expect you to have the freedom to express these views in many places outside of the US, either.

Be glad that your speech has not been identifed for repression, as religious speech has in many countries.

Timebuilder,

I don't think anybody is calling you or other right wingers on this board a fascist. All they are saying is that the fact is Fascism lies to the very far right of the political spectrum while communism falls to the far left. Obviously the left and right wing politicians in our country do not represent the extremes of either side.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I got the very distinct impression that some of the comments reflected the idea that the name "right" was associated with "nazi."

plus, someone's gotta defend the right wing nazis, right?

Curiously, the comment came up discussing a French lawyer defending Sadaam. The above comment would have described Sadaam as a "right wing nazi."

My point is that there are comments being made that are not only incorrect, but only serve to inflame and muddy the waters.

Ah, now I see. Sort of like when the right-wingers on this board call the left-wingers "commies."

Exaggeration. Nothing to get your britches in a tizzy about.

Nazis or National Socialists as they are called actually are extreme left wingers. Fascism is the ultimate goal of the Democratic Party if you listen to their rhetoric. They are for Government Control of industry, just like your deified "heros of the workers" Vlad.

There are only two differences between Nazis and Communists:

1) Nazis believe in private ownership, but government control of industry rather than government ownership and control of industry.

2) The Nazis were not as efficient at killing their citizens as Communists.

So Vlad, realize the man you share your screen name with is really just a Nazi that wanted to own industry as well as control it.

What does that make you?

It's in his DNC hatebook, err, handbook. Page 101. Never mind that Hitler was ardent left-wing socialist. The lefties are trained to label anyone who dares to disagree with them as a racist, sexist, homophobic nazi bigot. It's congenital.

Liberals HATE America.

Last time you checked with who? www.cpusa.org?

Yea, traits of right-wingers like Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, Louie Farakhan? Or Robert Byrd (D-KKK) blurted out the "N-word" twice in a March 2001 TV interview. "There are niggers. I've seen a lot of white niggers in my time," Byrd told "Fox News Sunday's" Tony Snow. Or radical left-wing Julianne Malveaue who said that she hopes Clarence Thomas eats lots of eggs and butter and dies early. She must ne a right-winger with that kind of hate, huh? Oh wait, nope she's a democrat. How about Charles Wrangel who said the Klan doesn't wear sheets anymore, "they wear suits and talk about tax cuts." He must be a right-winger with all that hate. Nope, he's a dem who loves communist dicators.

How about Bill Lockyer (left-wing liberal attorney general for CA), who said last summer about the CEO of Enron Corp., "I would love to personally escort him [Kenneth Lay] to an 8-by-10 cell that he could share with a tattooed dude who says, 'Hi, my name is Spike, honey.' This is liberal hate speech (called tolerance by the left). A Democrat politician openly calling for an unpopular businessman to be raped behind bars.

How about Liberal psycho-lunatic Alec Baldwain? On Late Night with Conan O'Brien and worked himself up over House Judiciary Chairman Henry Hyde; "I'm thinking to myself if we were in other countries, we would, all of us together, all of us together would go down to Washington and we would stone Henry Hyde to death!" the Baldwin rant began. "We should go to his home, and we'd kill his wife and their children. We would kill his family!!"

So go ahead and give us all a lecture on how "tolerant" and compassionate liberals are. What a crock.

Liberals HATE America!

Outstanding post.

Thanks. It's easy to throw the Labels back in these left-wing fanatics faces. It's actually funny, Liberals are EVERYTHING they accuse the right of being. They are mean, vicious, hateful, greedy, cold-hearted, closed-minded, selfish, intolerant, bigoted and racist.... and they prove it every day!

Liberals HATE America!

I HATE Freight!

.

That would explain Hitler's lifelong obsession with wiping out communism (including attacking Russia and throwing communists in concentration camps.)

Now I understand. Thanks for correcting all those years of "liberal" education.

You're welcome. The word Nazi is made up from the first two letters of the word german word "nationaler" and the third and fourth letters of the german word "Sozialist."

"We are socialists because we see in socialism… the only chance to maintain our racial inheritance and to regain our political freedom and renew our German state… We are a workers' party because we… are on the side of labor and against finance… As socialists we are opponents of the Jews because we see in the Hebrews the incarnation of capitalism, of the misuse of the nation's goods."

Joseph Goebbels, 1932

Ummmm...
Didn't stalin kill everyone who disagreed with him?
How about Mao's cultural revolution?
Hey? How's North Korea doin?
I'm sorry man, but just because some kook named lenin writes a book about control of production doesnt mean it works.....

I'm no fanatic about bush, but come on Nazi?
Take your medication guys
And BTW most peple support Bush's views on marriage, right or wrong or nazi.

And also, Communism and facism both suck major-a$$.... And they both end up with wide scale oppression...
Im sorry but it's true, they don't freakin work, Vladimir. The world isn't fair, it's not the job for some government jerkoff to decide how much I should make.

Ever been to the DMV? Now imagine that at the doctor, grocery store, dentist, church(oh ya not allowed, silly me)!!!

Hey! That's real progressive! YAY COMMUNISM!

OHHHH? WAIT!!! They have rich people there too! ELITE? yep got them, POOR!!!!!! YOU FREAKIN BET!

God....

Keep tryin though guys, the worker's revolution will come.....

What, then, would be the extreme right wing of the political spectrum?

Im not sayin either extreme is ok. Just sayin that extreme left has doen just as much damage as extreme right. And that hitler wasnt a republican/W isnt hitler

From what I've been seeing lately, the Democrats would regard anyone who holds true any two or more of the following would be considered a right-wing extremist.

-Abortion is wrong

-Liberal judges attempt through judicial activism what they cannot win at the ballot box

-God exists and Christ was the greatest person who ever lived

-"Spiritual" people are trying to live with the benefits of religion without having to give up a hedonistic lifestyle

-"If it feels good, do it" is the wrong way to live your life

-Bowing at the altar of the dictators, socialist, communists and despots at the UN is no way to decide foreign policy

-Hard work, sacrifice, and personal accountabilty are what REALLY made this country great

-The traditional family is the cornerstone of western (and pretty much every other) civilization and destroying it would be a horrible mistake.

-All people should be treated equally, regardless of race

-We cannot tax ourselves into prosperity

-The second amendment, being part of the bill of rights, guarantees an individual's right to bear arms

-There will always be poor people, and this is NOT the fault of the rich

-Tort reform is necessary in order for this country to survive

-Terrorism can not be bargained with or appeased, it has to be destroyed

-Ronald Reagan was the right man in history for his time, and therefore was a great president

-Trent Lott and Rush Limbaugh's "racist" statements weren't racist at all, but Hillary Clinton's "Ghandi running a gas station" joke certainly was

-John McCain is a "Republican in name only"

-Jimmy Carter's winning the "Nobel Peace Prize" destroyed the prestige and honor that used to go along with that award

-The fact that this country spends $750 Billion a year on education proves that problems can't be solved by just throwing money at them

-"Peace through strength" and "trust but verify" are words to live by

-Evil exists

-There's nothing wrong with drilling for oil in one of the most desolate places on the planet

-People should be able to keep what they earn and NO ONE has the right to tell them that they make TOO MUCH!!

-Peace does not mean the absence of war

Very well said. Someone also needs to remind Kerry that the way to defeat terrorists holed up in some cave is not to send the FBI suits in. You send the Marines.

Maybe I'm not as conservative as I thought I was... I would have said that it was the award to Arafat that demolished the reputation of the award.

That lawyer Saddam's family has hired for him really is quite a piece of work, isn't he?
