Freight Dog needs Career advice ( WWYD)

Hi ! i hope some of you can answer my questions i am a cargo pilot at a good company.when i originally came here i thought i could avoid the regionals and go work for a major airline after i got a 1000 hours of jet pic time in a learjet

1} How realisitic is that plan ? how valuable is that experience in terms of the competion that i will face ---- regional capts with 121 experience in crj's and erj's

2}where do you regional capts plan to go after you get your pic time

3) so should i leave now and go to a good regional or stick it out here for 3-4 years ( also we are in the check business -----whats your take on that )

4) BTW Happy christmas

I would stay there to build time and then go to jetblue, southwest, spirit, etc and make a career at one of those... forget AA, DAL, and UAL. Or make a career at a regional?? that seems to be happening more..

I think I know where you work at. I had the same questions. I ended up leaving (from the jet) for the regionals. Mostly for quality of life issues down the road. If that hadn't mattered to me, I'd have stuck it out for sure. The learjet was sure fun to fly with just boxes! I've been gone only a week, miss the flying but not the lifestyle (very hard to commute).

Stick it out on the lear at least until you upgrade and get 1000 PIC turbine. Once you can check that box, see what is going on with the airlines.

Why won't anyone aknowledge where he works? It's not that big of a deal. I used to work there also then went to chq almost 2 years ago. It was the best decision I ever made. I know that captain on a lear part 135 is good time, but definately isn't as good as captain on a 121 ailine. (I'm not trying to start a debate.) Are the guys on the lear right now going anywhere? If they are, maybe you should stay, but if they don't have much potential to go further, come here or Comair, ASA, or any regional for that matter. If you have any questions, pm me.

AIRNET!...do I get a cookie???

Is Airnet developing plans with regards to the new Check 21 rules? By the way, Airnet was featured in a segment on the History Channel last week regarding dangerous cargo - the show talked about the radioactive medicines that Airnet transports and how the Lear was an ideal delivery machine for that type of cargo.

If you want to work for an airline go to a 121 carrier

if working for an airline is your career goal , i think your chances are much better working at a good regional , most of the lear captains seem to be stuck here , the ones that are leaving are going to the fractionals, corporate etc
then again rarely we have someone go to southwest etc but i really think it is because they were good people they would have gotten that job even if all they had was 1000 hours of caravan time , people going to southwest etc are few and far between , jet blue does not even consider time in jets that weigh less than 20,000 lbs , so think about it carefully, i know one dude who was just weeks from becoming a captan on a lear and he choose to leave , he jumped from 135 jet sic to 121 jet sic IMHO he wasted 18 months of his life ,if he was gonna go to a regional anyway ,if he had left after he finished his prop time that would have been smart.

Im in the same spot as you and YES alot of guys have been able to skip the regionals and get on with SWA, JB, ATA, and some other heavy jet or foreign carriers.
Its all up to you QOL prob better at the regionals but pay and upgrades much better flying boxes. Leave your options open Id give up all airline asperations for the right corporate gig.

Pay better at Airnet??..I have always heard this and it may be true only if you stay and work extra hours to get overtime and fly 5th nights. First year pay is better than some regionals....

1 yr Prop Pic base pay at Airnet is now $22,700....

5 yr CA base salary at Airnet (assuming you didn't lose any $ on the performance based pay raises) = approx. $46,000/yr

Flying for Airnet was a great experience that I wouldn't give up for anything but I have no regrets about leaving...

Those numbers are correct, however, almost ALL of the jet runs have overtime and many of the props do too. You can make a lot more than base pay.

46000 for lear captain. PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!! That sucks! Im sure airnet is a good company and all but I made 70000 my first year as a lear capt flying freight and some pax and was home at least 5 night a week. I went straight into the right seat of a 747 classic for a international freight airline and will make captain soon. Freight in asia is expolting and when the domestic flying comes back I'll have alot of heavy time. I would stay in freight if I were you. Just something to think about.
