People on this board have taken that word and tried to shoe-horn it into a label to fit many different situations, and in doing so have started to devalue the meaning of the term "scab". By doing this we unfairly judge workers who are not scabs, but more importantly, we lessen the stigma on those who actually are. This reducing of true scabs is what concerns me because it is not fair to the many who did sacrifice by striking to make conditions better for those of us that would come after them. On the path that we are on today, we will all be scabs tomorrow.

Don't worry about JP....

He and most other posters here don't have the slightest idea what a scab is, so I don't even bother responding to him.
 
The application of the word Scab needs to evolve a little in the current environment. Between the current economic realities and the government's position on labor issues a significant airline (pilot) strike seems pretty far fetched right now. If you can't strike, then there cannot be any scabs...

But management has adapted (much like the terrorists) to use the system to their benefit in new and unexpected ways. Unfortunately there is always that small percentage of despicable turds among the pilot community who are ready to fall all over themselves to assist management in screwing over their brethen, in hopes of some miniscule short-term gain for themselves at everyone else's expense...and the word scab just fits so nicely it's hard to resist...

I would consider these folks in the revised definition:
Any actual picket line crossers (obviously)
Freedom A (non-alpa)
GoJets

Mesa/Freedom B is not on the list for several reasons:
1) ALPA (which BTW has failed them on several occasions)
2) Few Mesa pilots are actually scum, the junior ones often don't know any better (that is changing) and the senior ones are trapped by seniority.
3) Growth and opportunity at Mesa is slowing dramatically, so the only incentive to work there is because of
a) Geography
b) You have underlying deep-rooted doubts about your own worth and simply enjoy being treated like Sh*t (yes I have met some of these people...I wish they weren't airline pilots, but there's no law against it)

There are other regionals that treat their people like do-do, but none have had the recent growth opportunities experienced by mesa, so no one is accusing them of stealing jobs.

I've got respect for your posts because you contribute positively to this board. For that, I say thanks for your contributions. I do, however, totally disagree with your new definition.

This is similiar to Ted Turner stating that the 10 Commandments need revising because they are out of date. The definition doesn't need to be "reinvented" or "revised". It is what it is, and nothing more.

Just because they did an end-run around the intent of a good-faith contract and technically avoided qualifying as a scab doesn't make them any more honorable than a picket-line crosser.

Maybe a better way to put it would be don't give willing & eager whip-saw participants a status higher than "scab" simply because they don't meet the technical generation of scab. Whatever you want to call them (perhaps "@sshole" is sufficient) make sure they get what they have coming when you have the opportunity to influence their futures (or their commutes)!
