Write to your congressman and tell him/her that it is a matter of safety.

Your congressman will then call the FAA Administrator and ask, "Is this really a matter of safety?"

The FAA Administrator will respond that it is not....your letter is then discredited....especially with pilots over age 65 now carrying passengers in our airspace....

See...this is where the cat is already out of the bag. If you really wanted to have a legitimate discussion....you should've done something to stop the ICAO rule change.....you either did nothing...or your viewpoint didn't matter.

Tejas

Write your rep and the FAA and remind them it IS a safety issue. Include this tidbit: Some airlines were close to getting relief on 02 mask use while in cruise, then the Cypress accident happened. The 02 mask rule changes are no longer being considered. There are parallels that can be drawn between both the proposed 02 mask changes and retirement age change; we need to illuminate that to both the FAA and Congress. Just because we have not had an incident involving age doesn't mean THAT'S NOT what's out there lurking for us. You can't say age 60 hasn't worked, let's not wait til metal gets bent to figure out we had a pretty good rule.

If you're an under 60 FO and you support changing the age, consider this: You'll be a test pilot. You're age is the only thing enabling this operation. You are not the captain, you are no closer to the tiller, you have no additional authority...but your responsibility has gone up exponentially. (And of course you're getting no more money for this either!) You, or someone you know, could end up in the weeds with some geezer that's supposed to be retired! Your going to have to "stand and deliver",the geezer will simply declare that his/her retirement flight and bolt with the age 60+ bonus bucks...and that's if your lucky!

It's a bad rule change. Tell the FAA and Congress we don't experiment with our customers. We should recind our approval allowing age 60+ captains flying in the US.

I see a lot of opinions thrown around here. How about some of you posting some facts. IE. accident rates by age. Deaths by age of pilots, etc. I read a published study on the SWAPA website and it refutes all the things you guys are saying but I would be interested in reading your data.

As for govt. pensions and flying as a hobby now. I take offense. I am not on a pension but a retainer. I am subject to recall. Congress doesn't pay us a pension. The retainer can be stopped anytime, it isn't owed to us by law. I am now in my second career and working to secure my future. If age 65 is passed I will get 5 more yrs. If I choose to work those yrs I will put 1million dollars in my pocket, and 100,000 in my 401k. Everybody coming along after me will have that same opportunity whether they are delayed in upgrade to capt. or not. staying an FO a little longer now to have a chance to work 5 more yrs at the highest possible earnings rate seems reasonable. To oppose this is short sighted.

Post some facts yourself!

Here's a fact. That 1.1 million can be made in corporate aviation after you retire from 121 flying. No one is stopping you.

So get to steppin'.

Please cite the ruling of the Supreme Court--I've seen it referenced many times but have not had the time to look it up. Thanks.

Just a little bump because my request is getting lost in the posts--even though some who have posted since I originally put this out a few hours ago have cited this Supreme Court decision in their past posts. Please help! Thanks.

You guys are misusing a "safety" rule for career progression. If you really want career progression just have the union require every pilot to retire after 20 years with the company regardless of age. That's how McDonald's franchises work. They've had plenty of opportunity to make their money. Anyone that stays after that would just be a greedy sob that's hurting the careers of those below them.

A little bump again. I'm confused as to how some who have posted about this Supreme Court decision are still on the board today but have not had the courtesy to reply to my request for information. A lady is offended! LOL!

I thought the arguement was age discrimination? Yours sounds like a financial one.
