What is the difference between the two? FMZ-2000 and NZ-2000. I looked on Honeywell's website but could not really tell the difference. Thanks for the help.

The FMZ-2000 refers to the Series Flight Management System. The NZ refers to the Navigational Computer portion of the system (the brains). There are also several different CDU (simply used for pilot interface to the NZ computer) displays available to interface with the NZ...such as the CD-800, CD-810, CD-815, and the CD-820. Likewise in some aircraft such as the G-IV and possible the Hawker 800XP (not sure on that one specifically) you will also find a PZ which refers to the performance computer. Both of these refer to just a single component of the FMZ series system.

Hopefully that is the info you were looking for.

Fly safe!

Best answer I've heard yet! Thanks.

Here is a follow up question: Can you have one without the other? From your description it sounds like if you have an FMZ-2000 then by definition you have the NZ-2000 navigational computer and vice versa. Is that correct.

I'm just trying to learn as much as possible about FMSs and I've heard the FMZ and NZ used interchangeably.

I don't believe you can. The CDU is simply a data entry component. The NZ computer is the brains to the system itself. The primary components of the system like I said previously are at minimum the CDU (Control Display Unit) and NZ (Navigational Computer) and a DL (Data Loader). The newer systems (incorporating the CDU-820) are also capable of Video (up to 6 cameras I believe) and also graphics (AIRSHOW, ONEVIEW, Terrain Telelink). So basically to answer the question is all of the components make up the FMZ series system. So you would have to have the minimum components (ie NZ,DL,CDU) to have the FMZ system. Can't have one with the rest.

By far of the FMS systems that I have used UNS, GNS-XLS, FMZ-2000...the Honeywell FMZ-2000 is by far the easiest(most logical) and the most powerful one available. I have never used the Collins units but I have heard that they are not as user friendly as the Honeywell system is. Just my $.02.
