Flying to Havana, Cuba?

Hey, we've got a trip to Havana Cuba comming up. Never been, so does anyone know the in's and out's of going there? What is the process, or is it even possible? Thanks

Last I heard, you cannot fly there from the states.

I know it is possible. I had a friend fly there a couple of months ago on his first flight as a new hire for his company. He flew as copilot from south Florida and said it was a great experience and really enjoyed doing that as his first flight. They took a senator there under a 135 op (I think) and stayed for the weekend. He said the people love Americans and things, such as eating, where relatively inexpensive. North American just did a bunch of flights to Cuba over the summer. You are also allowed to buy a limited amount of Cuban cigars when you go there too, but I can't remember how much. I think it's a one box limit.

I know you can do it...just not sure how..

I do know that you need a "sponsor" there...and a reason to go..like a humanitaran aid or something..

I bet it would be fun..lots of Havana Club and Romeo y Julieta's

Talk to the guys at Florida Air Transport (they are the ones that fly that DC-7 out of OPF and FPR). They go all over the Caribbean.

Also I think IBC has a landing permit for Cuba (out of MIA) you could give them a call. Or once again, if you want I will ask my friend how his company arranged the trip.

What's to know???? You either have overflight #'s and/or dip clearances, or you don't. There are a number of operators that fly there regularly on a charter/ad hoc basis such as GulfStream, North American,AirTran etc. They follow ICAO rules like the rest of the world, and their controllers speak very good english. File an ICAO flight plan and away you go, If you are going over on a lark, without Dip clearances, bring the phone # of a really good lawyer who specializes in international law. If you have Dip clearances/overflight numbers, bring lots of greenbacks and Trojans, and some aspirin for the hangover.

I frequently fly over Cuba, but have never landed there. Here's what customs has to say:

Aircraft arriving from or departing for Cuba must land or depart from Miami international Airport, as provided in subpart 0, section 122.153 of the customs regulations.

Aircraft going to Cuba must have a validated license from either the Department of Commerce or the Department of State.
