I have been flying in the Air Guard now for 21 years. I have commuted to both my airline job and the guard, lived at my airline domicile and now live near my guard base. Honestly there are other factors to think about when you ask the question where to live. Cost of living, schools(if youhave kids) and type of flying that BOTH will do. Since 9-11 I have been on active duty with the guard on a military LOA. Being a regular guardsman for so long the active duty points are helping my reitrement. Plus the ammount of money I am making is way more than I would be back at work with all the paycuts we have taken. I plan to return to work in October but will continue to live by the guard unit as most of my paid days with the guard I can do flying locals and the sim. So to me those are still days I can make extra money and be home at night with my family. Having to commute to both is VERY STRESSFUL on your marriage and family life. Best case senario is live close to both like some friends I have who fly for Pinnacle and are in the C-5 unit in MEM. Either one that works for you is best. But seeing you can really offset first year pay with the military I'd opt to be as close as possible to the guard/reserve unit.
